"I thought part of this deal is a chimney sweep, but they did everything, except that. I called to find out why this particular sweep was not done and was told they don t perform this type of service. So, actually, all I got was a vacuum and cleaning of the fireplace, some important advise and nothing more. Heck. I could have done the vacuuming part, myself and save me the fee of $179. This is a rip-off for the service I got...and I still have a birds nest to contend with...."

To stop it, you need to replace the air your fireplace draws out through the chimney, so open a window to try and increase the airflow. Sometimes turning on a kitchen or bathroom exhaust fan can help, but they could also be the cause of the backdraft depending on the air pressure inside your home. Chimney caps may be installed by a few different professionals, including a chimney sweep or a mason that specializes in fireplaces and chimneys. A gas fireplace technician is the best person to install a chimney cap on a gas log fireplace vent to be sure the cap is appropriate for the application.

If you would rather use vinegar to clean the stone fireplace instead of dish soap, this mixture should work fine. Vinegar is slightly acidic, however, so it may etch some kinds of stone without quite a bit of diluting. For a stone fireplace, dilute it to about one cup of vinegar for every gallon of hot water. It’s a smart idea to test the diluted mixture in an inconspicuous area of the fireplace and watch for etching. You can use vinegar to clean quite a few different items around your home, and it’s especially good at removing stains.

In most cases, you should not put a TV on a fireplace mantel.
