"Champs Handy Worx redid my bathroom: changing the bathtub enclosure to a shower stall, installing a vanity with new faucet and switching out a the toilet and lighting. He removed all old bathtub/vanity/toilet from the property. Aside from removing the old and replacing them with new, he helped me select the new shower stall with shower head, dual flush toilet and vanity with faucet. Then he plastered and repaired the walls and topped it off with fresh paint and lighting. He set a goal of completing the project in 5 days and completed it in a timely manner. Champs Handy Worx was professional, worked efficiently, kept the workspace clean and tidy, and kept a sense of humor. I highly recommend Champs Handy Worx. He stayed within the work quote and delivered excellent work."

"Russ and his team were amazing to work with. Great communication and value! They removed my acoustic popcorn ceiling, hand textured the new ceiling in the living room, hallway, and bedroom, and painted to match the existing wall color. The results were absolutely stunning, and they were able to complete the project on time despite weather. I truly appreciate Russ and the team at California Republic Drywall. Would recommend them 100% for your drywall or acoustic popcorn ceiling removal needs."

"The service was way beyond excellent and professional in quality and performance. I plan on having the company come back and do some work on my upstairs area and come back in several years and refurbish the excellent job. The information provided was clear and excellent and I was highly impressed with everyone on the crew, how hard they worked, and how well they cleaned up each day. Dr. James D. Turner"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Plaster can be a difficult DIY to master, especially if you plan to plaster an entire room, rather than patch a small area. Before you begin a plaster DIY project, you need to know which tools and type of plaster to use. It's also important to know how to prepare the surface and apply the plaster for a smooth finish. If that all sounds like a lot of work, you may prefer hiring a local plaster repair contractor to do the job.

The amount of drywall you need for a 1,000-square-foot basement depends on the ceiling height, angles, number of doors and windows, and more. To find the wall square footage, multiply the width and height of each wall, minus any gaps from windows or doors, and add the totals together. You’ll also need enough drywood nails or screws to install the drywall correctly.

Yes, you can speed up the time it takes for plaster to dry, but it's important to do so carefully to avoid issues like cracking or crumbling. Proper ventilation is key; open a window or use a fan to circulate air in the room. Heat can also accelerate drying, but be cautious, as too much heat can cause the plaster to dry too quickly and crack. Check the plaster's packaging for the recommended drying temperature and set the room's thermostat accordingly. While managing humidity is important, avoid using a dehumidifier, which can remove moisture too aggressively and result in crumbly plaster.

Yes, you can install drywall over plaster, but there are important factors to consider. While it can create a smooth, flat surface, it is often not the best approach. Installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall's thickness, which can cause issues with existing window and door frames that may no longer fit. You might also need to adjust power outlets to keep them accessible. A better, though more expensive, option is to remove the old plaster and lath entirely before installing new drywall. Drywalling directly over plaster seals in the old material, and if any problems arise later, you will need to remove both layers down to the structural beams for repairs. Given the potential complications, this job is best handled by professionals.

The age of your home can clue you in to whether you have plaster or drywall ceilings. Homes built after the ‘70s are more likely to have drywall ceilings and walls, while older homes have plaster. You can also do the pushpin test: A pushpin will go into drywall, whereas it’s much harder to push one into a plaster wall. If you’re still unsure, ask a drywall professional to let you know which type of ceilings and walls you have.
