Avoiding HVAC maintenance will only lead to more costly repairs over time. The parts of both your heating and cooling systems require cleaning and lubricating to work properly. If you skip these steps, essential parts such as your condensate lines, evaporator coils, motors, and more will run into critical problems.

As a rule, it’s best to replace your HVAC filters every three months. But in some cases, you may need to change your filters more frequently. For example, if you use thin filters (1 to 2 inches in depth), you may need to swap them out every month or two. If you smoke inside or often keep your windows open, aim to replace the filters once per month.

Don’t run your AC with a wet filter. It can cause your AC to work too hard, which will run up your utility bill and cause extra wear and tear on the system. You could also spread moisture and mold throughout your house. Turn off the AC, remove the wet filter, and check for cracks or clogs. Fix the problem (with a pro’s help, if you need it), and put a dry filter in place before you turn the system back on.

Your air conditioner can temporarily run with a dirty filter, but it won’t work as efficiently. It will need to work harder to blow cool air throughout the room or house, and this can eventually cause the air conditioner to overheat or die prematurely. It’s much more cost-effective to clean or replace filters than to pay higher utility bills each month and replace the entire AC unit more often.

Both an air purifier and a dehumidifier can help prevent future mold growth, but neither can remove existing mold. An air purifier will improve air quality and trap mold spores in the air, whereas a dehumidifier will reduce moisture in the environment. Keep in mind that you need to make sure your air purifier uses HEPA filters, which are rated for mold removal.
