"Because I needed only a repair after a tree limb damaged the roof, many roofers either would not bid or I would have to wait for any repair. Universal did the repairs over several days by sending over crews after they had finished a prior job. Worked out well."

"I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and once I told Dale that over the phone that I was looking for gutter services he actually didn't want to come up the mountain to give me an estimate. We traded several phone calls and I finally agreed to have the work done without an estimate knowing it would be pretty hard to find someone else to come up the hill. He arrived about 15 minutes before I got back to the house and was informing my wife that his charge would be over $400 even though he admitted to me when I saw him that the square feet of the gutters was less than what we talked about on the phone (again, he didn't give me an estimate before doing the work). I had to ask him his rates and we did the calculations in his truck. After that, I was happy that I wasn't being taken for a ride."

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

If your gutters get overwhelmed every time it rains, adding an extra downspout is a solution. First, you'll need to decide where to add the downspout. If your current setup only has a single downspout, one option is to place a new one at the opposite end of the gutter. If you already have a downspout at each end, adding a third one in the middle can help to lighten the load.

You can hire a professional to add a downspout yourself by cutting into the existing gutter and attaching the necessary parts, such as an outlet and brackets.

The duration of a repair job can range from a few hours to several days. Simpler issues may take 1-4 hours, while more complex work or extensive damage could take 1-3 days. The final timeline depends on the complexity of the problem, the extent of the damage, and the location of the work.

Yes, and repairing such damage is another repair that’s done often. Sagging gutters are usually the result of one of two things: damage or overload. For example, ice buildup over the winter due to clogged gutters can cause expansion, stretching the gutters. A falling tree limb or even a rogue baseball can cause gutters to sag. Sagging gutters can be repaired, but they are often replaced because it can take less time.

Outside of regular maintenance, most gutter repairs are best left to the pros. Most gutter projects require basic ladder safety and (sometimes) getting on top of your roof. Without the proper equipment (or if you generally get a little nervous with heights), you could put yourself at risk of serious injury. On top of that, improperly repaired gutters could result in longer term damage that requires a full replacement.

Yes, caulking or sealing your vinyl gutters is a good way to help prevent gutter leaks. When you’re installing gutters, it’s important to overlap the sections to help avoid issues like leaks or drips, but they can still happen. In this case, adding caulk can help. Make sure to use a caulk designed for multiple surfaces, like a silicone-based caulk. You can also purchase a gutter sealant as well, which is specifically designed for this purpose.
