"Aondrea was a tremendous help with our move! She helped us plan the best way to organize the kitchen and closets, decide where to hang our art work, and was overall supportive from start to finish! I highly recommend her for organizing, decluttering and most importantly beautifying your living spaces!"

"I have interviewed several home organizers. Maribel far surpassed them all. This woman has over 30 years' experience. She is a high energy, outgoing person who truly has a personal mission to help others and see them change. She will counsel you to use what you have and not to buy expensive replacements unless you choose to do so. It is a joy for me now to be able to put things away! She opened up my small living room that also serves as my art studio, and I now have room for a convertible sofa in the living room so my daughter can visit me. Maribel has cleaned out my 10 x 10 storeroom in two afternoons, made my fronthall closet into a pantry, decorated my front hall, revised my kitchen and done major work on my living room/art studio. She can handle heavy lifting and carpentry. She is always aware that you are the boss. She will meet you on your wavelength. Helping you is truly her happy place!!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

When you are securing your DIY home office built-ins to the wall, you should start by locating the wall studs. You'll then want to use long screws to attach the cabinets, shelves, and bookcases directly to the wall studs. Your built-ins will be far too heavy to attach to the drywall alone by using anchors.

Yes, adding a built-in or custom closet generally increases your home's value and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed closet adds utility, organization, and a touch of luxury, which are appealing selling points. Most homeowners see a return on investment (ROI) of 50% to 60%; for example, a custom closet can add about $1,000 to your home's value on average. The specific ROI depends on the type, with custom walk-in closets typically providing more value than reach-in closets. However, to maximize value, ensure the closet doesn't significantly detract from the room's usable square footage. Converting an entire room into a closet can actually lower your home's value. Similarly, using overly lavish materials may not recoup their cost. A good strategy is to add a closet that takes square footage from a non-living area, such as a garage, to create a mudroom closet.

Since they are so fragile, it is not usually recommended to stack anything on top of your packed lamps. If you have sturdy boxes, and what you plan to put on top of them is of a similar weight, it’s okay to stack.

The vertical space between closet shelves depends on what you're storing. For clothing like shirts and sweaters, 10 to 12 inches is enough. Towels and linens need 12 to 15 inches, while tall storage bins may require 18 inches or more. Overcrowding your shelves can reduce accessibility and increase clutter, so be sure to leave breathing room for your items.

Plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and solid wood are all popular options for closet shelving. Plywood and solid wood are sturdy and ideal for extended shelves or heavy items. MDF is a budget-friendly choice for light to moderate storage, but it can sag under heavy weight if not adequately supported. Wire shelving is another alternative that allows airflow, making it especially useful in humid spaces such as laundry rooms or basements.
