"We hired Best Builders Group to do a complete remodeling of our kitchen, powder room, breakfast room and laundry room. We honestly couldn’t be happier with the final results. Sofia, Zohar and the entire team were very professionals. They did all they could and made sure that we will get the end results we wanted and they didn’t let us make any bad choices that will end up with a mistake or problem. All the sub-contractors that also worked at the house with them, did a great work (each one in his own specialty). The workers and Sofia from the office were prompt, polite, neat and just great people to deal with and to be around. At first, when we met with Zohar, he mentioned to us that he have no problem to use any of our sub-contractors if we want to but he advised us to use their sub-contractors because his experience with them from the past. In few words we can say that they did an excellent work all around. Our budget was not high but also not low. Zohar was able to work with us around our budget and we were very happy with that. Overall – we are extremely happy and we fell lucky that we had hire this company. Our remodeling of the kitchen and laundry included everything besides the appliances. All the appliances were purchased by us and with the help of Zohar. Zohar went with us to his vendor and he was able to find us a great deal for all the appliances and the laundry machines."

"Working with Ilan Yosef in Los Angeles was an outstanding experience from start to finish. His team handled our full home renovation with precision, transparency, and professionalism. Every detail was discussed clearly, timelines were respected, and the craftsmanship exceeded expectations. It?s rare to find a contractor who genuinely cares about quality and customer satisfaction. Highly recommended for anyone looking for reliable remodeling services."

"Tom Cohen and Joe Sapir were great. They went through the possibilities and options with us, including what we could do with our budget and possibilities for financing. We bought our house as part of a repossessed hillside property, and we had to buy it in "as is" condition with decades of deferred maintenance. We had chipped away at fixing up the interiors over the past ten years, and were ready for a major (and long overdue) overhaul of the exteriors. The house is 1,200 square feet, but the garage is basically two stories with the living area on the third floor. That means a lot of stucco to repair and a lot of surface to paint. We needed new windows to replace the 50-year old ones that were original with the house, along with a new front door and sliding glass door in the back. This included expanding the size of the windows so that they were bigger (and actually up to code). The insulation in the attic was very old and needed to be replaced as well. Our garage door was dented (by a previous owner) and needed to be replaced along with the motor. Our back porch was falling apart, and we needed that repaired and painted. Our back yard had little privacy and was too hot to spend much time in for most of the year, so we also had them put in a large alumawood patio cover that extends over the porch and most of the yard (to the edge of our garden). It was important to us not to just pick a "low bid" contractor and instead to get a company that would do the work with high-quality materials and skilled crews with proper insurance and quality guarantees. We wanted this to be the last major overhaul we have to do on the exteriors of this house. The crews that came to do all of the work were very skilled, and worked with us to make sure they were doing exactly the work we wanted. Each phase of the project went quickly and efficiently, with prompt inspections and "touch-ups" afterwards to make sure everything was done well. Tom and Joe were very responsive and communicated well with us throughout the projects. We are very happy with the work, and we got our money's worth."

"We met with three flooring contractors for the job described above. Of course, with each estimate, we learned more about what goes into a flooring project and eventually changed what we originally asked of Martinez. Martinez's price was about 35% less than that of larger flooring companies. We felt confident about his work after reading his Angie's List comments. With the language barrier in mind, we made a list of Spanish flooring words. With the list and my existing moderate Spanish skills, we were able to communicate our questions, wants and explanations. We modified our original plan for a neutral/natural stain and went for a darker stain. Martinez was happy to do so for a small price. He laid samples and worked with us to pick a stain that matched our architecture. Our second big change was to upgrade the top coat to "Traffic" and apply two coats. Again, Martinez was happy to oblige our desires and explained the price difference before we made a final decision. Martinez worked quickly and cleanly through the five day project."

"There was a problem with the scheduling and there was a real mix up. They some how went to my business address which is in Beria and nobody showed up. We had to call the actual contractor but it worked out. They had to come over and they stayed over to finish it. They did it in one day instead of two. Overall they did a great job. I would tell others about them. We have had people compliment their job and other kitchens cannot compare to what they did in ours. The deal was for 900$ but we had about 4 lights replaced for an additional cost."

"When I closed escrow on my house, I decided to make appointments with several general contractors to get a bid on things that needed to be done. The house was fairly old and needed major renovations done, so it was very important to me to make sure that the contractor I hired had previously done work this big. Eric was the 4th contractor that I met with. We went through all the things that needed to be done in the house, a kitchen remodel, 2 bathroom remodels, a small room addition of a master suite and master bathroom, and the list goes on... He showed me pictures of projects that he had done on the same level and I was very impressed with his work, I even went to see one of the projects. I ended up hiring Progressive Builders for their quality work and reasonable price. Thank you!!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.
