Prolonged or repeated exposure to high heat can potentially cause discoloration or damage the countertop's sealant, making it more susceptible to staining. Additionally, the heat from a pan can transfer to the granite, creating a burn hazard for anyone who touches the surface shortly after.

Butcher block countertops are durable, but wood is generally susceptible to extreme heat, so you should avoid placing hot pots and pans directly on a butcher block counter. This will likely cause some aesthetic damage in the form of scorch marks. Instead, invest in some trivets and put your hot cookware on top of them.

If you have light renovation experience, you should be able to build your own countertop made from wood or laminate. These tend to be the most DIY-friendly materials, but you’ll need to be comfortable using a circular saw and taking precise measurements. When it comes to installation, leave anything that involves plumbing, electricity, or gas lines to the pros.

Most recycled glass countertops are nonporous, so they don’t require sealant. There is, however, one major exception.
