"Very prompt response to my inquiry to get my roof gutter cleaned. Rafael arrived on time, did a great job - everything back in order when the job was finished. Rafael is very pleasant and professional; he showed me pictures of the gutters before & after. Price was very reasonable. I am having additional work done."

"Crown Roofing On 02-13-25 Crown Roofing completed a re-roofing of a residential property in Fresno. Crown Roofing owner Curtis provided 5 star service and I am 100% satisfied. He is licensed by the state of California, is bonded, and provides worker's compensation coverage for his employees. The project was done timely as promised, and greatly improved the appearance of the house in addition to the protection provided by the replacement shingles. The Crown Roofing crew were polite, respectful and worked efficiently. Expect construction mess from dismantling the old shingles, but you'll be pleased with how thorough everything was cleaned up and disposed by the Crown team. Pricing was very fair and there were zero surprise charges or upselling. A written guarantee for installation and a factory warranty was provided for the shingles. Overall I completely satisfied with Crown Roofing and highly recommend their services."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Underlayment is used between existing shingles and a new metal roof to prevent friction and wear from the shingle granules on the underside of the metal. The underlayment also helps prevent water intrusion and allows expansion and contraction without wearing away at the roofing material.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

If your roof has a vapor barrier, you will need approximately one square foot of roof vent for every 300 square feet of ceiling space. If there is no vapor barrier, the roof should have one square foot of roof vent for every 150 square feet of ceiling space. If you are not comfortable making this determination, a local roofing professional can help.

Yes, an underlayment is required for metal roofs, especially when installed over an indoor residential living space. This underlayment acts as a protective barrier between the metal roofing and the roof deck. Common materials include tar, asphalt felt, or woven synthetic polymers. Depending on local building codes, existing shingles in good condition may also suffice. A quality underlayment is crucial as it provides protection against water intrusion, improves energy efficiency through insulation, helps absorb sound, and ultimately extends the lifespan of your roof.

Copper roofing works well in all kinds of climates, but it’s ideal in humid climates because it naturally repels fungus, moss, and algae. This makes it one of the best roofing options for Cape Cod homes in the Northeast, as well as homes in the humid southern states and snowy northern states. That said, copper is vulnerable to thermal expansion. If you live in a climate that has extreme temperature changes, your contractor will need to consider this during the installation process.
