"We worked with Ali (sales manager) and Tony (project manager), who took the time to design a project that made sense for our property and our budget, made a number of suggestions and recommendations and were never pushy or tried to "sell" us on something. The crew really went above and beyond to provide top quality workmanship and overall we were in very good hands. Highly recommended!"

"This company was a pleasure to work with. They removed our old deck and installed a beautiful new deck. Omri and his crew were friendly, professional, timely, and incredible craftsmen. They provided useful advice and expertise; creating a much more usable deck. We are very satisfied and will highly recommend Palm Construction to all people I know!"

"Lifetime Custom Painting prices are very fair and reasonable.  Luis and his crew were very professional and punctual.  This is the second time we have used their services.  We are always pleased and satisfied with their work.  The lastest work they did for us was for a 5 bedroom house.  Luis estimated 5 days for the project, his crew was able to complete in 3 days.  His crew also does a follow up touch up job down the road.  I already recommended  them to several of my neigbors.

"He is well experienced and good at what he does. I feel as though he is excellent. He came to the house and examined everything and gave me an explanation of what he was going to do and how the job was done and who does good work and who does bad work. His estimate was for $3,000. He seems like a very professional and knowledgeable person, and I assume that he is, but his price was just too expensive for me. It was a good experience. It went good. Everything went perfect. He was very professional and I have no complaints about him or anything, and it was just the price. He was on time. I would use him in the future, considering his prices."

"They had to come back and redo it. The initial person who came out was not very professional. She was the salesperson as well as the provider and was always in a hurry to get somewhere and was kind of condescending. They were not very good communicators."

"While my wife and I are happy overall with the results of our remodel now that the job is over, we can't say that we'd recommend Mojo Design and Contracting to anyone else for a similarly large job. Our complaints are that Anthony didn't take enough responsibility for the materials under his care, his communication was inconsistent and sometimes unprofessional, and he didn't inform us of what he considered major changes in the work effort and therefore cost of the project until weeks after the related work was done.

Anthony told us at the beginning of the project that regular daily communication was essential to the project -- which we definitely agreed on, since we were living out of town during the project -- and said that he would be in constant contact. Unfortunately, we found this not to be true. Often, Anthony would not answer phone calls, emails and texts during the work day. With phone calls and texts he usually responded within 24 hours, but he sometimes ignored emails completely. The biggest lapse in communication happened immediately after our second payment of $23.5K: he stopped responding to us for a couple of days, and his phone was turned off and his voicemail box was full. This led to sleepless nights until he finally called, said he'd gone out of town in the middle of the week and left his charger at home.

Anthony was aware that we were spending most of our savings on the house and remodel and were very concerned about expenses. We didn't receive verbal or written change orders during entire process, except for $1,350 in additional stucco work and countertop costs. But at the end of the job, he presented an invoice with change orders for over $8,000 more than we were expecting. About $5,000 of this was for almost 100 hours of his night and weekend work which he didn't ask us to approve in advance, and which we suspect could have been accomplished during normal work hours: for example, he wasn't present at the house on a Wed-Thurs. when my wife was in town in the middle of the project, but then later charged us for 28 hours of work he caught up on that weekend. The final invoice also included $3,000 in change orders for additional drywall work, framing and plumbing. While we knew about some of the work, our problem with these charges was that this work was performed 6-7 weeks prior to this final invoice being presented, but we hadn't gotten any change order to inform us of a price increase. Our contract was a fixed price contract, not cost-plus, so we expected to be informed of any new costs by change order. Anthony said that he hadn't had time to review, add up and inform us of the costs until right before presenting the last bill because he'd been too busy.

Anthony asked us to buy and ship our new kitchen appliances to the house as soon as possible after the start of the project -- he insisted that he needed them on-site as early as possible so he could measure them exactly and be sure the kitchen would come together perfectly. Over a month after we had the appliances shipped to the house, Anthony called and said that he'd just unboxed them to start installing and discovered that the stove was damaged. Since this was over 30 days after the appliances were delivered, we weren't able to return or exchange the stove (despite hours spent in phone and email exchanges with the store and manufacturer). When we asked Anthony to cover all or even part of the expense of replacing the stove, he refused, even though he'd asked to receive them early and then left them uninspected in their boxes. This added $900 to the cost of our remodel.

Fortunately, most of the subcontractors Anthony hired -- especially the electrical and cabinets subs, which we've reviewed separately -- were experienced professionals who did a great job. (The only exception was the plumber, who installed our new water heater in a way that violated CA code; to his and Anthony's credit, though, they did fix it quickly.) And as I wrote earlier, in the end we're happy with the results of the work. But we lost our trust in Anthony due to the inconsistent communication and the way he handled the expense increases. To give him the benefit of the doubt, he may have underbid the job because he simply didn't have enough experience with jobs this size to anticipate the work involved. But whatever the reason, we wound up with a stressful and disorganized experience, and we can't recommend Mojo D&C to other Angie's List members.

"The work was adequate. They took far too long. 5 months. It ended in October. After reviewing the contract, we recognized there was an overpayment. The owner promised to get me a check. Which he did...it was returned for insufficient funds! I have not received the money. He is completely unethical!!! Be very very careful if you choose them for their work. You will end up spending much more than anticipated!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Building a deck is often worth the investment, not only because it provides more utility to your yard and gives you more space to entertain but also because decks tend to add value to your home. Keep in mind that second-story decks often require concrete footings, which means they will bump up your property taxes, while decks built on the first story generally don’t require a permanent foundation and won’t affect your taxes. Even with the tax increase, decks are usually a good investment in the long run.

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

No, you don’t need a permit to repair and replace a few boards on an existing deck. However, if you’re making structural changes to the deck or tearing down the old one and building a new one, you will likely need a permit. Check with your local municipality for the regulations and rules in your area, or ask a local contractor who builds decks for advice.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

Trex states that its Trex decking is an eco-friendly composite material made of 95% recycled or reclaimed materials (including plastic and wood), making it a sustainable brand of choice. According to the company, Trex is one of the largest plastic bag recyclers in the U.S., with each 500-square-foot Trex deck containing about 140,000 recycled plastic bags.
