The average cost to hire professional movers is approximately $1,700, but the total price can range from as low as $920 to over $12,000 depending on the move's complexity. For local moves, typically under 100 miles, costs generally fall between $920 and $2,530. Long-distance moves are more expensive, with prices ranging from $2,700 to $10,000 or more.

Several key factors influence the final cost:

• Distance and Home Size: The mileage of the move and the size of your home.

• Number of Movers: Hourly rates can range from $25 to $50 for one or two movers, increasing to $100 to $200 for a team of four or more.

• Services: Additional services like packing, unpacking, and storage will add to the cost.

• Specialty Items: Moving large or delicate items such as pianos, vehicles, or large aquariums incurs extra charges.

• Timing and Access: The time of year, your specific moving date, and the ease of access to your home can affect rates.

Don’t forget to account for other potential costs like moving supplies and tipping your movers.

To prepare for moving a piano, start by documenting its current condition with photos in case of any damage during the move. Secure the piano's lid and wrap the instrument, including its keys and pedals, with bubble wrap and moving blankets for protection. Note that if you have hired professional piano movers, they may handle this step for you.

Next, prepare the space. Measure any tight spaces or doorways to ensure the piano will fit through. Clear a wide path from the piano's location to the exterior door, removing any furniture or obstacles. It is also helpful to prop open doors to make the exit easier.

On moving day, ensure the moving truck can park as close to the exit as possible. For safety, keep children and pets away from the moving area to prevent accidents or distractions.

Most professional movers can provide a wide range of moving-related services, and you’ll need to pick and choose which ones you want to use. Examples of common services offered include the following:

• Organizing and packing your belongings

• Protecting delicate items with bubble wrap or other protective equipment

• Moving your belongings and furniture out of your old home

• Moving your belongings into your new home within a certain distance

• Unpacking your belongings in the new location

• Moving heavy items, like pianos

• Moving your vehicles

• Storage if your new home isn’t ready

Typically, local moves involve either renting a moving truck and moving yourself or hiring local movers to do the job. For long-distance moves, options include hiring a full-service moving company that handles packing, loading, transportation, and unloading, or using a self-moving service where you load your belongings into a container or trailer and have it transported. Another option is hiring professional movers for labor-only services, where they assist with loading and unloading your rented truck. You can also opt for moving pods or moving containers that can be transported to the destination.
