"We had our water heater replaced by The Water Heater Company and the service was excellent from start to finish. The technician, Mike P., was professional, on time, and extremely knowledgeable. He explained everything clearly, completed the installation efficiently, and made sure the area was clean before leaving. My new water heater is working great. We really appreciate the quality of work and the attention to detail. We highly recommend The Water Heater Company especially if you want a smooth, stress-free water heater replacement done right the first time."

"Kayvan was a wonderful service tech! He was on time and professionally checked out the water heater and the HVAC system. He was so polite and friendly. He explained the need for a new filter in the heating unit and showed me photos of the unit located in the attic. "I have my regular plumber but wanted a second quote so I went on the Angie app. They recommended several plumbers to install an automatic water main valve shut off unit that I needed for my homeowners. AXP contacted me on a Sunday and had a technician out by 9:00 on Monday. Felipe was wonderful and gave me an extremely reasonable quote. His boss, Albert came with parts and they did the work. Came across some excessive root problems but fixed the issue that made the job harder and longer but they got the job done!! Very professional and kept me abreast every step of the way. I would highly recommend this company!"

Water Heaters FAQs, answered by experts

No, you’ll need to drain the tank before changing a water heater element, as the water heater element sticks through the side of the tank and uses a gasket to prevent water from pouring out. However, you don’t always need to drain it completely. If you’re only replacing the upper heating element, you can drain the tank until the water line is below the element. If you’re replacing the lower element, you’ll need to drain the whole thing.

If you're replacing a broken water heater, now is a great time to make sure you're selecting a unit that has the right capacity for your household. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a small 50-gallon to 60-gallon tank is sufficient for households with one to three people. A medium-sized 80-gallon tank is considered ideal for three to four people. A larger tank may be needed if your household has four to six people.

Electric water heaters use a high amount of electricity, so they’re best for homeowners who subsidize their electric bill with solar or who live in an area with inexpensive electricity. For others, gas water heaters versus electric water heaters may be the more cost-effective solution, with the added bonus of heating water quickly and efficiently. No matter which you choose, you can lower your water temperature as low as possible to keep costs down.

On average, a tankless water heater should last between 10 and 15 years. Its lifespan will be affected by how much it's used, the effect of weather where your home is on the unit—colder is harsher and will shorten lifespan—and if the heater is maintained appropriately and regularly. There are many signs your water heater needs to be replaced, so pay attention to anything that changes with your heater or hot water.

The size needed for your expansion tank is determined by the size of your home's water heater. Expansion tanks are available in 2-gallon and 4.5-gallon sizes. A 2-gallon tank will be appropriate for water heaters up to 50 gallons. An adequately sized tank should have a volume that equals 2% to 5% of the water volume within the system. A plumber can evaluate your home's water pressure, water heater size, and other factors to provide suggestions for picking out the best expansion tank.
