"Erinn was my initial contact and he gave a very through and fair estimate. We had structural work done to support floor joists and large beams under the garage that needed replacing. Ernesto and his team, Julio, Salvatore and Gilder worked tirelessly to complete the work and were respectful, punctual, informative and good humoured throughout the entire process. I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to others. A really great company!!"

"I hired Beginnings Engineering for a structural project on my 45-year-old home and worked with Jonathon Sipe and Nada. I spoke with several other firms in Orange County first. Most of the alternative proposals leaned toward complicated, expensive “perfect” solutions that might make sense on a new build, but didn’t feel grounded in the reality of an older home. Jonathon took a different approach: he listened to what I was trying to accomplish, worked through the constraints with me, and came back with a solution that made sense in the real world—while still being safe and code-compliant. On top of that, the experience was just… easy. Communication was straightforward, follow-through was solid, and they were genuinely friendly people to deal with. They weren’t the lowest engineering quote, but they were the lowest-cost path overall because their design avoided the unnecessary construction scope other firms recommended."

"Structural Engineer Ehab contacted me about my residential property inquiry. He had already reviewed my property and the general situation I was inquiring about when I called him back. We spoke to me about his concerns with the project and answered all my questions over the phone. He was excellent to work with. Professional & Knowledgeable. Would highly recommend reaching out for technical issues concerning residential engineering. The reason he wasn't hired was that he provided feedback that dissuaded us from taking on a costly project that would not have achieved our stated goals. I will definitely reach out to Ehab in the future prior to beginning any major residential addition or remodel."

"I called on a Friday evening and Jonathon answered. I needed a structural engineer inspection to satisfy an underwriting requirement of the lender for a house I was selling. Jonathon came out that weekend, was very pleasant and helpful and I had the letter I needed first thing Monday morning. I was quite impressed with his service and would definitely use him again."

"Our home had an outdated layout. All the different living spaces were closed off by walls. We wanted an open concept from the living room to dining room to kitchen. After interviewing several contractors, we felt that Pacificland Constructors better understood our needs and their price fit our budget.
Martin and his crew at Pacificland Constructors came in and did an outstanding job! The
first thing that they did was place up plastic ?walls? to block off the dust to the rest of
the home. They also laid down two layers of thick cardboard paper on the ground too
prevent the existing floor from being damaged. After the prep work, they quickly
removed the two non-load bearing walls. Pacificland hired an engineer to do the
structural design of the load bearing beam that would be used to support the roof and ceiling in lieu of the existing wall. A temporary wood wall was constructed to support
the existing ceiling and roof while the crew removed the existing walls. Next they
installed the structural beams, wood posts, and the metal connectors. After the beams
were set in place, the temporary wall was removed.
Once the flush ceiling beams were installed, came all the easy finishing work. The crew
moved all the existing electrical outlets and switches to adjacent walls, installed the
drywall and did the rough taping, and closed up an existing window. Pacificland
Constructors was done in 5 days and did a great job cleaning up the job site. Whenever I
had a question all I had to do was either call, text, or email him. He was very accessibly
and helped answer all my questions during the construction process. I would definitely
recommend and use him again for future projects.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The best way to determine if ceiling cracks are structural is to hire a ceiling contractor to inspect the cracks and provide a professional opinion. That said, you might be able to make an educated guess based on the size and appearance of the crack. Larger cracks, cracks accompanied by sagging or discoloration, and cracks that travel from the ceiling down the walls are all signs of structural issues.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Any issue that affects the structural integrity or soundness of a home is considered a structural issue. In addition to foundation cracks, other signs of structural issues include roof leaks, bowing walls, sloping floors, gaps around windows and doors, and more.

Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.
