"We couldn’t be more thrilled with our newly painted house by Jay’s Paint Service! I contacted Jay after getting quotes from some other painters and being strung along by one company I engaged to paint our house this spring. Going back to look at reviews I spotted Jay’s and left a message for a quote. Jay called me back within minutes and set up a time to check the job the next day. He sent me a quote by the end of that day. Throughout the process he kept on top of the timeline, reached out to me to schedule power washing and time to discuss colors. Not once did I feel like I had to track them down. They showed up early every morning of the job and Jay’s crew ~ Justin and Antoine ~ were friendly, supportive, courteous and completely professional. Their prep work and painting was meticulous. Jay was on site every day to help with projects and check progress. They also repaired windowmframes, painted our door and shutters, and installed new sconces. And the job was done on time! The end result is more beautiful than I could have imagined. Highly recommend Jay’s! My neighbor even hired them while they were here painting our house!"

"The Brandon Paint Co crew were very professional and efficient. Our house was power washed, stained, and the trim painted in under a week with a beautiful result. Communications on site were friendly, open and timely. Setting up the job occurred before the winter and communications were excellent (from interactions to get an estimate, through documenting the contract, and then keeping us informed on planning/scheduling implementation)."

"Eddy got the job done over several days. It was a big job to re-stain front door and panels and molding inside and out. Also re-stain patio door inside. The front door had older-style hardware. We could not find a replacement hardware set so Eddy refinished and painted the old set. It turned out beautiful! Eddy also painted my very high window wells in the family room. beautiful. Eddy and his helper, Claudia, are very nice people, professional and pleasant to work with. I will hire Genesis painting the next time I need work done. Their work is first class."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

When choosing between deck stain or paint, knowing what will last longer is important. Deck paint lasts longer than deck stain. With deck paint, you can get up to 10 years of coverage before you need to reapply. With deck stain, that time is significantly shorter at two to three years

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

It’s best to use an exterior latex acrylic paint to promote maximum adhesion to composite decking. This flexible paint type can better cope with the natural expansion and contraction that can occur with composite deck boards. Oil-based paints won’t adhere as effectively and are more likely to crack and peel as the boards flex. Testing whether your chosen paint will stick on an inconspicuous section or a spare board is a good idea.

Applying a sealer or topcoat after staining wood is highly recommended, though not always strictly required. A sealer protects the wood from moisture, UV rays, and weather-related issues, which is especially important for outdoor surfaces like decks and fences. It also enhances the stain's durability, prevents fading over time, and gives the wood a cleaner, more professional-looking finish. For some indoor applications, a sealer may not be necessary, depending on the type of stain used and the level of protection needed. It's always best to check the stain manufacturer's recommendations and consider the wood's intended use and exposure when deciding whether to apply a sealer.

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.
