"Riley was on time and kept the worksite meticulously clean. He inspected the chimney, even climbing up on the roof to look at it from the top. He took out the old gas logs and debris that was 25 years old, painstakingly, clean the old doors, including the glass, and disposed of all the debris, leaving the area cleaner than when he came. He also gave estimates and critiques on replacement electric fireplaces. Finally, he capped off the gas line and close the flu so we wouldn't have drafts."

You can close up a chimney instead of demolishing it. Homeowners often go this route because the cost of removing a chimney, especially a structurally important chimney, can be expensive.

Properly closing up a chimney involves closing and sealing the damper, installing a chimney cap damper, and sealing the fireplace opening with a door or bricks. The cost to seal and cap a chimney is around $500 to $650—significantly less than the average chimney removal cost.

The damper, located just above the firebox, can open or close the chimney flue. The damper should remain closed unless there’s a fire burning in the fireplace. Closing the damper prevents energy loss through the chimney and cold air from seeping into the home during the winter. The short answer is yes, but the longer answer is more complex.
