"Javier and his crew did an outstanding job on re-stuccoing my home from a very course finish to a fine finish. He and his crew showed up on time, answered all of my questions, addressed all of my concerns, met all of my expectations, and all at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend Javier for any stucco/plastering jobs."

"We hired Edgar with Stucco Specialties to repair stucco around a patio door and install architectural foam around the area. From the moment Edgar came to our home for the estimate he was professional, prompt and answered all of our questions. His pricing is very reasonable. He completed the work originally quoted and offered to address some other stucco areas of concern. His work is impeccable, he maintained a clean work area and cleaned after completing all of the repairs. Edgar is a true craftsman, we would highly recommend his services."

"I would highly recommend hiring Boss Lady to anyone in need. She was excellent! And she is a very nice person to boot. The whole job was done fast, efficient, and looked perfect afterwards. Also, she was right on time and was able to schedule me in the morning after I contacted her. I’d definitely hire her again myself without a single hesitation. A+++!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can use drywall repair techniques for some types of plaster damage. Tiny holes and small cracks in plaster can be patched in similar ways to drywall. You apply the necessary compound to fill the hole, wait for it to dry, then sand it down. For larger damage, like water damage or mold, you need to use plaster-specific techniques and materials.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

Look for flaking paint or air bubbles that burst and then flake away. Paint will begin to flake after being exposed to minimal moisture or water, so it’s a good indicator of any water damage. If you notice your paint starting to flake, feel the plaster underneath to see if it is soft or damp.

You will be placing holes in the wall to hang the mounting bracket. If you’re mounting a large TV, the bolts in use could make significant holes around half an inch in diameter. Other than a few holes, though, the process of mounting the TV should not cause significant damage to the wall, unless you make an error and miss the wall stud, tearing out drywall. Should you decide to remove the mount later, the DIY drywall repair cost for a small hole usually is $10 to $30. It’s a repair you can do in a few minutes.

Plaster that sags or bulges, shows extensive deep cracks, or is crumbling from water damage or simply time may need replacement. Plaster walls can look a little “worn” for a long time before they need replacing. The only real way to know if it needs a replacement is to hire a professional to assess the condition of the plaster.
