Most homeowners leave their sprinkler timer on at all times—and then the timer turns sprinklers on and off as it’s been programmed to do. As to how long you should run your sprinkler, the answer to that question depends on what types of plants and soil you have, how hot it is where you live, how established your landscaping is, and other factors. Although they come at some expense to purchase and set up, given the water savings a smart sprinkler can offer, many homeowners think they’re well worth the cost. If you already have a sprinkler system installed, some smart sprinkler controllers can simply replace your existing sprinkler timer—a process you can do if you’re comfortable with basic wiring.

The color code for the common sprinkler wire is white, and then you can assign the remaining color codes to the rest of the wires for different sprinkler zones. For example, you could use red for the first zone, then blue for the second, and so on.

Color-coding helps you keep track of which wires go to specific zones so that you or a pro can address any issues or repairs quickly. Check your local electrical code for any requirements regarding sprinkler wire colors.

Sprinkler heads need a pressure of 30 PSI, with an operating range of 15 to 30 PSI. Drip lines also need a similar operating rate of 15 to 30 PSI and a pressure of 20 PSI. If the pressure is too low, the water won't be evenly distributed, but if the pressure is too high, parts of the lawn or garden will be over-watered and possibly damaged by friction from the high pressure. These components need operating ranges rather than a hard and fast PSI to keep the sprinkler system efficient.

It depends on the system. Some drip irrigation systems, like emitter and misting systems, need to have their nozzles exposed. Drip tape and soaker hoses can be covered with a light layer of mulch to avoid damage from foot traffic, garden tools, and UV rays. However, ensure the tape or hose is designed to be buried and inspect it regularly for any signs of damage or mold growth.
