"Chris just got done installing the next set of 5 windows on our house and we are very happy. They look great and open and close easily. Chris did the installation himself and was very professional. We have a door and more windows to do in about 5 months and will 100% use Chris and Alta Sierra again."

"Smooth from the beginning. Met james, super helpful with suggestions. Then I had the office follow up multiple times during the waiting period before my replacement day. The installation guys who did the work were fast and nice. They finished a day early."

"I called United Builders to inquire about bathroom remodeling. I told them my budget was around $2000. I was told I would receive a refund for the Big Deal if the quote for services was too much. When the rep came to my house for an estimate I was quoted over $20,000. My entire house, including all contents, isn't worth $20,000. Therefore I am requesting a refund."

"We initially interviewed 7 prospective contractors and obtained 4 bids before deciding on Nexxus. The owner's (Tony Panterra) pitch was that although his bid would probably be higher than the other contractor's, his work was of a higher quality and that he used only the best products. Nexxus, however, did not provide a written estimate, which raised a red flag. However, we ultimately decided to go with Nexxus because it had numerous and uniformly excellent reviews on Angies List from consumers who actually used Nexxus' services (Nexxus did receive negative reviews from persons who thought its bids were too high). The other contractors we considered had a few positive reviews, but nothing close to the long history of strong reviews that Nexxus had. Moreover, although Nexxus' bid was higher than the other contractors, it was not excessively so. More importantly the work was, for the most part, excellent. In particular, the installation of the wood siding was impeccable. Ipe is a notoriously hard wood and difficult to work with. But the corners were sharp and straight with little or no gaps. The iron gates also turned out well although some of the solder joints could have been a little cleaner. Tony, the owner, was very responsive to any changes or requests we made during the course of the project and was on-site at least 1-2 per week to check on the progress of the job. Francisco, the project manager, was present almost every day and made sure we were aware of how the job was proceeding and sought our input on various aspects of the job and made sure we were satisfied before he proceeded with the work. Tony estimated the job would take approximately 4 weeks and he would have been right on target but for several days of rain that halted work. All in all, we were very satisfied with Nexxus' work, would use them again, and would highly recommend them to anyone interested in remodeling their house."

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

The entire window replacement process, from the initial consultation to the final installation, typically takes between four and 15 weeks. This timeline accounts for measuring appointments, ordering, and manufacturing. On the day of the job, the physical installation takes about 30 minutes to two hours per window. A full-house replacement can take one to three days to complete. Factors that can extend this timeline include the total number of windows, custom sizes, complex window types, second-story installations, and any necessary repairs to existing window frames or openings.

Finding a reputable contractor for an egress window installation involves researching and vetting potential candidates. Start by searching for local professionals, reading customer reviews, and checking their websites for a portfolio of their work.

Once you have a shortlist, ask the following questions to ensure they are qualified:

• Are you licensed and insured?

• What experience do you have installing egress windows?

• Can you provide references from previous customers?

• Do you perform the work yourself or use subcontractors?

• What is the estimated project timeline and your current schedule?

• How do you handle payment?

There are a range of egress window types available, including:

  • Single-hung: $100–$400

  • Double-hung: $250–$500

  • Horizontal/sliding: $150–$800

  • Casement: $200–$500

  • In-swing: $350–$700

When choosing a type of egress window, consider how you’d like to open it. For example, double-hung egress windows open from top to bottom and let plenty of fresh air in, whereas sliding windows slide open for easy access.

Adding windows to a house is expensive. Budget roughly $5,800 to add a single window, and double or triple that to add two or three. In some cases, adding a single window can exceed $20,000, depending on the type of exterior wall, the size of the window, the type of window, local permit costs, and other factors.

The proper way to install a window well is to measure the window, dig a hole deeper and wider than the window, place a drainage tube and cap, anchor the well to the foundation, caulk the seam, and backfill the hole. The job requires tools such as a hammer drill and auger and some heavy digging. Proper placement and window well installation are critical to preventing water from leaking into the window.
