The most obvious sign that it’s time to repair or replace your microwave is that it is no longer heating food. If you notice your food coming out cold or not as warm as it used to, call a small appliance repair technician for help. 

Some other signs your microwave is in need of service include:

  • It’s making strange noises during operation.

  • The interior plate no longer spins.

  • You notice strange smells or see smoke.

  • It’s close to or more than eight years old.

The magnetron, which is the component that generates the microwave energy used to heat your food, is the most likely piece to cause your appliance to fail. Unfortunately, your microwave won’t serve any purpose without a functioning magnetron, so not only is this the most common repair, but it’s also the most important. 

Repairing a broken magnetron usually costs between $100 and $200 or $175 on average. About half of that cost goes toward labor, and the other half is for a new magnetron. Higher-end microwaves may demand larger or more complex components, which could increase your repair cost.

In most cases, the repair is worth the value as it should help maintain the life of the appliance for a longer period, and the repair should be a lower cost than replacing the entire unit. For example, if the cost to repair your refrigerator will be more than 50% of the cost to buy a new one, and it’s 10 years old or more, then it may not be worth repairing. 

Small appliance repair costs average around $50 to $400, with costs ranging significantly based on the type of appliance, the extent of the damage, the issue, the appliance brand, and the availability of replacement parts. Generally speaking, you’ll pay less for repairs on very small appliances, like blenders and toasters, than you will for microwave repairs.
