"My elderly mom's 40+year old kitchen was in desperate need of repairs and a new look. The issue came to a head when the kitchen floor started to buckle, fortunately surfacing while I was visiting my mom. I live abroad so finding the right person who could both deal with the issues and guide my mom through the entire process was critical. After meeting Sobi, I felt much more comfortable leaving my mom with his careful and skilled hands in charge. Initially my mom agreed only to only repair the most needful but because Sobi made my mom feel so comfortable and was able to quickly gain her confidence (and mine) she decided it was time for the kitchen to be fully restored. Sobi helped in every aspect, from securing permits to going with my mom to make selections, to answering her repeat questions, all while also lifting her mood (despite all the disruptions that come with a full remodel)- he provided an end to end service par excellence. There was good transparency on all costs and communication was clear at every step. The kitchen looks beautiful and my mom is most satisfied. A needle in haystack experience : ) and shame I live abroad as I have a kitchen that could use his craftsmanship."

"Couldn't be more pleased. Enrique responded to my initial inquiry the day I sent it to Angi. He was at my home the next day to preview the work I needed, submitted his proposal within a few hours, and completed the work within a week. The stair railing is exactly how he described it to me and I am completely satisfied with the workmanship. I would definitely recommend Live Oak General Builder, Inc."

"All I can say about our experience using Cunningham Construction is - they were outstanding! They handled our whole job, from beginning to end, in the most professional manner, communicating with us every step of the way, always following through on their promises, and ultimately producing a most beautiful new gallery building for our artwork. We couldn't be happier! Certainly 5 stars in every aspect and the strongest recommendation we can give! Kudos to you two, Paul and Vicki! (from Karen & Matt Wyse, Moraga)"

Small jobs welcome

"I needed to have the opening for a new garage door reinforced to support the new door, and have the cracked and uneven concrete floor of my pre-1947 garage repaired. Sebastian confirmed our appointment by phone and arrived on time to take a look at the project. He understood what the garage door installers needed to have done in order to install the new door and suggested a couple of alternatives to complete the project. He clearly explained the work that needed to be done. Sebastian's estimate arrived when he said it would. He kept me updated during every step of the job. He and his crew cleaned up after themselves after each day's work. I was very impressed with Sebastian's professionalism and attention to detail and would definitely him again."

Customers say: True professional

"We hired McCormick Home Builders to remodel our living room, and we are beyond pleased with the result. The team was professional, worked efficiently, and Aris design ideas made a huge difference. The room feels so much brighter and more spacious. This was the best decision we made for our home, and we were already planning our next remodel with them."

"After a brief discussion on kitchen layout we decided on a design. I started on the demo. After that Larry made and installed beautiful maple cabinets with dark inlays. He also set us up with names for other contractors to finish out our dream kitchen."

Woodworking FAQs, answered by experts

Many people, including professionals in the field, use baluster and spindle interchangeably to describe the vertical components of a railing (or technically, a balustrade). However, there are subtle or distinct differences, depending on who you ask. The most common interpretation is that spindles are thin or delicate versions of balusters.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.

Joists and beams are both part of the flooring system above your basement, with the beams spanning the length of your home and getting support from vertical posts underneath, and joists usually spanning half the width of your home with no support posts underneath. The floor joists provide even support to the subflooring and flooring above, and they distribute that load to the beams. The beams then distribute that load down through the support posts to the foundation.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Building involves setting foundation posts, framing with durable wood, adding roofing support, and protecting from elements with water-resistant finishes.
