"Couldn't be more pleased. Enrique responded to my initial inquiry the day I sent it to Angi. He was at my home the next day to preview the work I needed, submitted his proposal within a few hours, and completed the work within a week. The stair railing is exactly how he described it to me and I am completely satisfied with the workmanship. I would definitely recommend Live Oak General Builder, Inc."

Small jobs welcome

"All I can say about our experience using Cunningham Construction is - they were outstanding! They handled our whole job, from beginning to end, in the most professional manner, communicating with us every step of the way, always following through on their promises, and ultimately producing a most beautiful new gallery building for our artwork. We couldn't be happier! Certainly 5 stars in every aspect and the strongest recommendation we can give! Kudos to you two, Paul and Vicki! (from Karen & Matt Wyse, Moraga)"

"Heath Stairworks did a great job on our stairway. They added a beautiful hand rail and iron spindles. They listened to what we had in mind, made suggestions, and it turned out exactly how we wanted it. I would definitely use them again."

"From the beginning to the end of my project, was professional and meticulous! Although we had unexpected delays due to supply chain issues Larry was there to figure it out and make it work and get it done. From the listening and planning of what I wanted to the end result is perfect. My kitchen is now what I thought I wanted but more… he customized everything to what I wanted down to the drawer heights for cookware and cooking supplies. I always knew when he would arrive and leave with the team and communication of the project was amazing. With a full remodel he even made sure I had a cooking heat source throughout the project. Attention to details shows in his final work and I absolutely love my kitchen, even 2 years later there is nothing I would have done different because Larry made sure it was right the first time!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

While you can perform many routine home maintenance jobs yourself, it’s often a good idea to bring pros in for certain tasks. HVAC maintenance, fireplace and chimney inspections, foundation repairs, and roof inspections and repairs should be handled by professionals who know what to look for and can safely perform repairs. You may also find it helpful to hire a local house cleaning service to help with deep cleaning.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

If you don’t have a coping saw, you can use an angle grinder to cope crown molding, but it takes a little more precision. Place your molding down on your workbench, angle the grinder at a 45-degree angle toward the molding, and back cut the wood. You’ll need to carefully angle your grinder to accommodate the curves in the wood, and aim to remove around 1 inch from the profile of the molding.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface materials can be cut with standard woodworking tools, such as a circular saw or a jigsaw. However, it is crucial to use the correct type of blade to avoid damaging the material.

For a circular saw, a tungsten carbide-tipped blade is required; a triple chip grind blade is highly recommended. For a jigsaw, you should use a fine-tooth down-cutting blade. Do not use blades designed for cutting wood, as they can cause microfractures that weaken the edges of the countertop. A diamond blade is also unnecessary, as those are designed for harder materials like natural stone, which Corian is not.

After cutting, the edge will be rough. It is essential to sand and smooth the cut edge to prevent microfractures, which can eventually compromise the integrity of the countertop.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
