"Sobi has completed three projects for us. He has exceeded our expectations for professionalism and quality of work. We built our custom home in 2001 and it was time to replace two corner windows and three sets of French doors. We sought bids from four companies and were very disappointed. We found Sobi on Home Advisor. He replaced two corner windows and three sets of French doors with one French door and two fixed windows to maximize our view of Mt. Diablo. The design change was his idea. The interior woodwork and enhancements around the windows is exquisite. The outside work, including stucco and painting, is perfect. Throughout the process , Sobi kept us informed of costs and timetable, always respectful of our schedule. We highly recommend him. He has a creative eye for design and knows how to bring your vision to fruition. We also appreciate is honesty, intelligence, and humor. We guarantee you will be more than happy with his work. One more stamp of approval: our dog, Thatcher, is enjoying the unimpeded view! We look forward to working with him in the future."

Small jobs welcome

"All I can say about our experience using Cunningham Construction is - they were outstanding! They handled our whole job, from beginning to end, in the most professional manner, communicating with us every step of the way, always following through on their promises, and ultimately producing a most beautiful new gallery building for our artwork. We couldn't be happier! Certainly 5 stars in every aspect and the strongest recommendation we can give! Kudos to you two, Paul and Vicki! (from Karen & Matt Wyse, Moraga)"

"Heath Stairworks did a great job on our stairway. They added a beautiful hand rail and iron spindles. They listened to what we had in mind, made suggestions, and it turned out exactly how we wanted it. I would definitely use them again."

"We hired McCormick Home Builders to remodel our living room, and we are beyond pleased with the result. The team was professional, worked efficiently, and Aris design ideas made a huge difference. The room feels so much brighter and more spacious. This was the best decision we made for our home, and we were already planning our next remodel with them."

"From the beginning to the end of my project, was professional and meticulous! Although we had unexpected delays due to supply chain issues Larry was there to figure it out and make it work and get it done. From the listening and planning of what I wanted to the end result is perfect. My kitchen is now what I thought I wanted but more… he customized everything to what I wanted down to the drawer heights for cookware and cooking supplies. I always knew when he would arrive and leave with the team and communication of the project was amazing. With a full remodel he even made sure I had a cooking heat source throughout the project. Attention to details shows in his final work and I absolutely love my kitchen, even 2 years later there is nothing I would have done different because Larry made sure it was right the first time!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

While carpenters and woodworkers perform similar tasks, their focus differs. A carpenter is typically responsible for the structural woodwork involved in construction, such as framing, installing sheathing, hanging kitchen cabinets, and installing trusses. In contrast, a woodworker handles more intricate and custom projects, like building custom furniture, installing wainscoting, and creating detailed interior trim and moldings. Based on these definitions, many woodworkers can perform the tasks of a carpenter, but it's always best to discuss your specific project with a professional to ensure they have the necessary skills.

While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. You can tell millwork apart from other types of carpentry because it’s manufactured at a mill. Notably, casework is also confused with millwork. Casework is different because it refers to boxes like cabinets and bookshelves.

While you can perform many routine home maintenance jobs yourself, it’s often a good idea to bring pros in for certain tasks. HVAC maintenance, fireplace and chimney inspections, foundation repairs, and roof inspections and repairs should be handled by professionals who know what to look for and can safely perform repairs. You may also find it helpful to hire a local house cleaning service to help with deep cleaning.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.
