"The new system is performing just as promised. Our old system was installed new 2 yrs ago in a new home and was not performing as it should. Our house is a ranch style, and very long, and the vents at the end of the house furthest from the air handler were blowing either cold air during operation of the heat, and warm air during air conditioning. Each room had a different temperature reading, varying as much as 10 degrees from the thermostat. Ric responded quickly to our call, and assured us the new plenum would fix our issues and he was right. Bill came out to measure and design the new plenum, using his vast experience and education. Matt, Frank, and Tyler installed a step down plenum over 2 days that provides for even air flow from the air handler out to the vents. They also installed a new style of vent cover to allow more efficient air handling. They were kind and professional, and did little to disrupt our life which was appreciated since I have the flu. They cleaned up their debris, and went out of their way to help us. We are very happy with Chino Heating and Cooling, highly recommend them, and will continue to use them for all of our HVAC maintenance needs."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should turn off your AC if it’s leaking. Turning off the system prevents more condensation from leaking and reduces strain on the unit if a damaged internal component or lack of refrigerant is the cause. While this may temporarily stop the leak, water can continue to drip from a thawing coil even after the system is off. As soon as you notice a leak, turn off the unit and investigate the source or call a professional for an inspection.

AC leaks are common, and an HVAC pro can usually fix them. You may be able to resolve some leaks on your own, but a professional HVAC technician should handle most AC leak repair. If left ignored, an AC leak could cause serious damage to your system or leave you with expensive water damage, usually leading to more costly repairs or replacements.

Ideally, an AC system should never need more Freon (a popular refrigerant) because it circulates in a closed loop. However, refrigerant leaks are not uncommon and may occur gradually over 5 to 15 years. If your system has a leak, it will need to be topped up in a process known as an AC recharge. Signs of a refrigerant leak include weakened AC performance, increased humidity in your home, higher utility bills, and a hissing sound from the unit. The cost of an AC recharge will depend on the size and type of your AC unit, as well as the type of refrigerant it uses.

A common HVAC rule is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of living space, you need 1 ton of heating or cooling capacity. Now that you know this common rule, you also need to know that it isn’t very accurate, and a dedicated pro wouldn’t use it for your home. If you talk to a pro who won’t or can’t perform a proper Manual J calculation, consider hiring someone more thorough.

The best way to reduce heat upstairs is to release it by opening a window. Hot air rises, and if you can create some airflow by opening a window upstairs and also one on a lower level, the hot air should be pushed out of the home. Remember that fans pointing out the window do a much better job of circulating air than fans pointing into the home.
