Calcium lumps in a pool are calcium deposits that form when a pool's water parameters are not in the normal range. They can float around on the surface of the pool water, making it look and feel dirty. The most common causes of calcium lumps in pools are calcium hardness above 1,000 ppm, alkalinity over 120, and a pH over 7.8. Keeping your pool’s calcium levels, alkalinity, and pH levels within the normal, safe ranges is the best way to prevent calcium lumps and other problems, including damage to the pool surface.

If you put too much baking soda in your pool, your alkalinity will rise. That means you’ll need to take steps to lower your alkalinity. You can either add more water (which will require more chemicals because they’ll be diluted), wait for the alkalinity to lower naturally, or use a chemical like muriatic acid to lower it.

Yes, you can use chlorine tablets in a salt water pool. It is not the standard recommended practice, but if your pool needs more chlorine, adding tablets can help temporarily fix the problem. Only add as many tablets as needed to keep your chlorine level around three parts per million. After adding the tablets, test your water to determine the chlorine content.

Technically, you can fill in a pool yourself—with the caveat that filling in a pool requires the ability to drain the pool properly and move a substantial amount of dirt, which aren’t beginner DIY skills. If you want to fill in a pool, you’re better off hiring a local pool removal professional.

Spools can come as small as 10 x 6 feet, so they don’t take up a lot of room in your yard. You’ll want to plan for pool decking, fencing, and other features that may take additional space, but for the most part, a spool’s small footprint makes it a great choice when you don’t have much yard space to spare.
