"George was here on Monday and had to swap out the control board out with a new board. He got the system up and reprogrammed in about an hour and a half. Talked to George prior to him coming and he was very helpful with diagnosing the problem and was prepared to fix the problem when he got here. George was very friendly and took the time to explain what the problem was and what he was doing."

Home Security Systems questions, answered by experts

Home automation systems offer a wide range of automation products and services. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Cameras: $35–$350

  • Door and window sensors: $20–$100

  • Doorbells: $100–$350

  • Locks: $150–$400

  • Garage door openers: $150–$500

  • Lighting: $20–$100

  • Speakers: $30–$300

  • Outlets and plugs: $20–$100

  • Thermostats: $150–$300

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: $50–$150

  • Smart home hubs: $200–$900

  • Blinds: $50–$75

  • Appliances: $50–$3,000

  • Vacuums: $200–$1,200

  • Lawn systems: $80–$300

  • Wi-Fi and Mesh systems: $200–$500

  • Water monitoring: $100–$1,000

Ultimately, the decision should align with your objectives. For general home security, visible cameras at entry points and high-traffic areas are recommended to deter intruders. In areas where privacy is a concern, use hidden cameras sparingly and within legal limits.

Professional home automation services can include automation for nearly anything in your home, so the possibilities are endless. Some of the more common things homeowners use automation for include the following:

  • Heating and cooling for automatic comfort

  • Security cameras and emergency call systems

  • Door and window sensors to detect opening, closing, and break-ins

  • Solar system automation to maximize energy savings

  • Automatic door locks

  • Garage door openers

  • Speaker systems

  • Lighting

  • Appliances

  • Smoke and CO detectors

  • Blinds and other window coverings

  • Lawn irrigation systems

  • Water monitoring

There is no “better” option, as it depends on your personal preferences and home’s needs. Wireless systems are much easier to install, making them DIY-friendly. Wired systems offer a more reliable connection that is not tied to a router, but they typically require professional installation.

You likely can reset your house alarm without the code, but it depends on many factors like how it’s wired and whether or not there’s a default reset code. Most companies make bypassing a security alarm without entering your code challenging to prevent burglars from simply resetting the alarm during a break-in. Your best bet is to contact your alarm company directly to get specialized support for your situation.

But, while you wait for support, you can disconnect it from the power source to stop the alarm from going off.
