"I had to have my wrought iron bars put up on two outside windows. Mr. handyman was on time. He worked efficiently and the job was perfectly done. In addition I had to have one other task done which involved re-screening a screen which he did! All in all, It was a great experience for me."

"Fantastic! Michael and his Dad Scott are the best. I had an old wheelchair ramp and no fence at my new home. They tore down the ramp and put in wood stairs and a small wood picket fence. Michael designed a plan that maximized every inch of space. I have a beautiful porch, stairs and fence. My little dog loves her new yard! When it was finished I even had a small patio space! They showed up on time, kept me informed every step of the way and cleaned up. Honest work at an honest price! I'm glad to have met and hired them!"

"Whereas I like the carpet and flooring, the new baseboards were painted (not a good job) by an unlicensed contractor they subcontracted with. They did credit me $100 however, I was stuck with the mess. We had called after we signed the contract and asked to replace the baseboards in the room that they put the new carpet in. They did not follow through and said we never called to add that to the order. Being out of town during installation, we had no idea things were not going exactly as we planned. I feel the owner and staff are rather condescending. They had an excuse for everything. It was a frustrating experience."

Install Stair Railings questions, answered by experts

You have a little flexibility when installing a handrail against a wall. The minimum distance between the two must be at least 1.5 inches, and commercially available handrail bracket hardware accounts for that minimum. The maximum distance a handrail can be from a wall is 4.5 inches, provided it doesn't impede the walking area.

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.

Building a new staircase can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the design, materials, and whether an old one needs to be demolished. Straight staircases are quicker to build than curved or spiral staircases, which require more intricate design and precise measurements.

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

Most homeowners prefer vinyl plank flooring to cover basement stairs, and this is generally considered the best option because it’s resistant to mold and won’t get damaged by moisture. However, carpeting is a more affordable installation and provides better traction to prevent slipping and falling. If you have kids or pets that will frequent the basement area, a carpet might be a better option to add some extra traction.
