He removed the dirt and clay in a timely fashion, and built a 3-foot-high retaining wall 180 feet long. All of our concerns were addressed, and questions were answered throughout the project. He did an excellent job with cleanup and removal as well. We would not hesitate to use him for future projects if needed."

The main difference between asphalt and blacktop is that asphalt has a lower ratio of bitumen—a low-grade tar-like crude oil—than blacktop. While blacktop is heated to 300 degrees or more, hot-mix asphalt is heated to a lower temperature, typically between 275 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. If the soil beneath your patio or walkway wasn't compacted, it will pull pavers down as it settles. Additionally, using bare soil instead of making a paver bed with compacted gravel and sand can cause sinking over time. To fix sunken pavers, consider recompacting the base and addressing any drainage or erosion issues in the area.

The average lifespan of an asphalt driveway ranges from 15 to 30 years, while concrete driveways last between 20 and 30 years, depending on several factors. Extreme temperature changes, cold weather, poor maintenance, and heavy traffic can all shorten the lifespan of your driveway. Be sure to reseal your driveway regularly to protect it from the elements and give it the best chance at a long lifespan.

In most cases, you will also need to lay a permeable sand layer below the pavers to encourage proper stability and drainage in your transformed patio, porch, or driveway.
