How long deck boards last largely depends on the type of wood and if it's treated or not. Untreated boards last anywhere from ten to 30 years, assuming proper care and maintenance. Treated boards can last up to 50 years. Composite boards also tend to last longer than pure wood boards.

Often, cracked deck boards are just an aesthetic problem and do not need replacement. However, longer or deeper cracks may be a problem, especially if they are on the end of the board. Your deck may look or feel fuzzy after pressure washing because the high-pressure spray tears some wood fibers as it removes the outer layer of dead and discolored wood. This fuzzy effect is a normal part of the pressure-washing process and will go away on its own in a few weeks. You can opt to spot-sand your deck if you’d like to remove it more quickly.

Constant exposure to inclement weather conditions can damage your deck, causing it to fade, warp, or crack over time. Regular maintenance keeps it looking and performing its best. That means giving it a good cleaning and applying a quality sealant or wood treatment to help defend against moisture, sun damage, and everyday wear.

We recommend hanging a porch swing at least 2.5 to 3 feet from the wall and about 17 inches above the ground to avoid damaging your home. You want enough clearance behind it and on each side of the porch swing to move around safely and avoid the chains rubbing against it.
