"I hired shady Mister Sparky to help with some electrical services on a remodel project. I have a fair bit of work that requires multiple trips. I have since discovered.....The Mister Sparky electrician on the first trip over promised, excessively over charged, and ultimately under-delivered, in addition they damaged my hardwood floors right at the front door for me to be reminded of their trip to my home. A few sordid details .... they over-promised ....it would be the same person on each return trip. Trip number two was a flop and resulted in no work being accomplished. The plumbers, the trim guys...all waiting on the sheduled electrician. I then sought other electricians. I obtained two more bids for the exact same work from qualified professional licensed and insured electricians. Mister Sparky wanted to charge a little over $3400.00. The next bid was just under $2200 and the 3rd was just under $1800."

For instance, if it’s wobbling, rotating too slowly, or if your ceiling fan is making noise such as squeaks, buzzes, and thumps, it’s time to have it looked at by a professional. Not only may it indicate a potential problem with the fan itself, but it could also signal a red flag that it’s improperly assembled or there’s an issue with the wiring.

If you’re removing a ceiling fan without visible screws, start by locating the fan canopy—a round cover placed above the fan blades and motor. There should be a thin ring that can be turned counterclockwise to remove the canopy and reveal the screws. After unscrewing the fan, you can disconnect the wires and remove the entire fan from the mounting hardware. For safety, make sure the fan switch is turned off before you remove the canopy. It may be easier to remove the fan blades first, too.

There are several types of ceiling fans, each with their own purpose or advantage. A standard ceiling fan works for most spaces, but low-profile ceiling fans are better suited to rooms with low ceilings. You can also find ceiling fans with lights, energy-efficient ceiling fans, and retractable blade ceiling fans.

If your home already has wires for a ceiling fan (and optional light kit), then it’s quite safe to wire and install it yourself. Always be very careful to shut off the power before you begin, and confirm that the power is safely off with a non-contact voltage tester before touching anything. It’s also highly recommended to use eye protection, rubberized gloves, and tools with rubber handles to keep yourself safe from electric shock.

Generally, a ceiling fan should be mounted at least seven feet from the floor in the center of your room with a wall clearance of around 18 inches. If your ceiling is more than eight feet high, it’s recommended by experts that the ceiling fan be mounted around eight to nine feet from the ground. This helps ensure a better quality of circulated airflow.
