Laminate countertops are generally the most cost-efficient, ranging from $8 to $27 per square foot. The best type of wood for countertops is hardwood. Hardwood is much more durable and resilient than softwood, so it won’t scratch or dent as easily. Oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and teak are all popular options that are relatively common in North America. Some homeowners prefer to use pine or cedar, but make sure to seal your countertop to help prevent damage. Yellow pine fares better than white pine.

Solid surface countertops are fairly resilient. You can use soapy water or ammonia-based cleaners. You can also occasionally use diluted bleach (around 5 tablespoons per gallon of water) for sanitization. Avoid window cleaners because they leave a waxy film that can dull the countertop’s surface. Solid surface material is nonporous, so there’s no need for sealing.

How often you need to reseal marble countertops depends on the quality and color of the stone, the traffic on the surface, and the type of sealant. Sealing at least once a year is the general rule of thumb. However, if your large family loves to cook or the countertops are in a busy family bathroom, you might have to reseal them every six months (or more). The surfaces of your rarely used guest bathroom might not need resealing for a few years.

The resin should be periodically sealed to help prevent it from wearing down or becoming porous. Very sharp or very hot objects can damage the resin surface, and there’s no way to fully repair it if that happens, so we recommend treating the counters well.
