They asked several times for me to come look at their work as they were pruning to make sure I liked it- every bit of debris was removed- they contacted a stump man and had them grind our stumps. We had to reschedule several times due to the rain and holidays, and they were always very agreeable. Really nice company!"

It is possible to cut down a tree on your property yourself, but we don’t recommend it. Not only is the work dangerous, but you could damage structures on your property in the process.

Leaving a tree stump in the ground poses several potential issues. Firstly, stumps can become a breeding ground for pests like termites or ants, which might spread to nearby healthy trees or structures. They can also attract fungi or diseases that could affect other plants nearby. Stumps left unattended could hinder future landscaping plans, obstructing new growth or making it challenging to mow. Additionally, as the stump decays, it might sprout new shoots, leading to unwanted tree growth. Removing stumps prevents these problems, enhancing the aesthetic and safety of the landscape.

Generally, you’ll want to prune back the trunk by 1 to 2 feet each year to promote bushy growth. Doing so concentrates vegetative buds closer to the bottom of the tree, where you can easily harvest fruit. For side shoots that are a year old, leave at least six leaves. 

Never remove more than 30% of a tree’s foliage during pruning—even if your tree is really overgrown. Removing this much foliage at a time could kill your tree.

February and March are typically the prime time to hire a tree removal pro, and some homeowners living in colder climates can save around 20% off services.
