" I'll paint the picture for you: I just got finished working an overnight shift on Christmas, which I had to spend hundreds of miles away from family, friends, and girlfriend. Nine out of ten things going wrong lately; not very inspiring times. Anyways, I stop at the bank to get my check made for the landlord and, thanks to a bit of brain fog, locked my keys in the car. I wound up spending six hours trying to get in, coming close a couple times, but no luck. Many people came and went in that parking lot and almost every one didn't stop to offer help or have any concern. Just a police officer who lent me some tools and another man who approached me and said he knew a locksmith that could take care of this in no time. I called and spoke with Brian and he assured me he would be there ASAP; it would be a little wait because he was taking care of a job on the other side of town. That was the best news I'd heard for some time, so I could stand to be patient. About an hour later he"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

It could be difficult to get in and out of a lock for several reasons, such as the keyhole needing additional lubrication. Particles, debris, and dirt can also get into a lock, making a key stuck (the lubrication can help with the removal).

A smart lock is a variation of a traditional lock, and since it uses similar locking mechanisms, it’s technically not any safer. The difference is that a smart lock requires a login instead of a physical key. Some smart locks have added safety features, like shutting down after too many attempts with the wrong code. Some smart locks are considered harder to pick than traditional locks, which can further deter intruders.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

A deadbolt has a different design, construction, and security level than a regular lock. Regular locks are mostly used for interior doors around the home, like bedrooms and bathrooms, and they usually include a locking mechanism on the inside. While regular locks are easy to use and install, they provide little security.

A deadbolt adds a layer of security and is most commonly used on exterior doors. The installation is typically more complicated, but they hold up to wear and tear.

Locksmiths typically recommend using a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, instead of the popular oil-based lubricants you can purchase at almost any store. Dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating instead of attracting more dirt and debris like an oil-based lubricant. You can find these at a hardware store; some are made explicitly for lock use.
