"Sam came to the house on a Saturday, which I appreciated. However, he was there only 15 minutes, diagnosed the problem as a bad control board, and said he would have to order one. It came that following Tuesday, and he came to install the board. Right up until then, everything was fine. I confirmed it would be 24 hours or so before the fridge was back to correct temperatures. It's supposed to be 37 in the fridge and 0 in the freezer. At its highest, it was around 52 in the fridge and in the teens in the freezer. After 24 hours, the temperatures had not changed. I contacted Sam who said he would call me back. He did, and said that he was mistaken, that it would be 24-48 hours for a fridge to cool down. That didn't sound right to me at all, but I took his word for it. This is also when he mentioned (not for the first time) that he was scheduled to go on vacation that Thursday. Well Thursday came and the temperature in the fridge had still not changed, it was hovering in the upper 40s in the fridge and in the teens in the freezer, still unusable. Knowing I couldn't contact Sam (and realizing I probably shouldn't anyway), I was fortunate enough to get a GE repair appointment. The very nice and knowledgeable GE repairman (named Eddie) came and diagnosed quickly that the fan in the freezer had broken due to the control board being installed incorrectly. He also noted that Sam had not connected the control board completely in the back. After working on it for about an hour, he replaced the fan, fan motor and fixed Sam's installation mistakes. Within hours, the fridge was back down under 40 degrees and by the morning, it was making ice and staying consistently at the correct temperatures. My main complaint to Sam is that he did not thoroughly examine the fridge either time he worked on it. If the fan was working on Saturday, it surely wasn't working after he installed the control board and after hearing from me that it wasn't cooling the way it should be, he should've checked other things in the fridge to make sure it was working. I'm sure he was just in a hurry to get on vacation though which is why he had such lackluster work. He offered to reinstall the bad control board and refund my money, which is both unprofessional and extremely rude. I would NOT recommend this repair person to anyone ever again."

"Absolutely would not recommend that anybody does business with Mr. Fix It Appliance Repair, the owner is Woody. He definitely does not fix anything and has horrible business practices. Our LG refrigerator was leaking through to the inside refrigerator whenever we used the water dispenser. I called them for a service call and Woody and his grandson, his helper, came out on 5/25/23. I told him the problem. He tested the dispenser to see if it would do the same thing, and it did. They started taking the water dispenser apart, then the icemaker and the shelving that housed the ice maker. They pulled the refrigerator out to turn the water off/on while they worked on it. After about an hour of working on it, Woody determined that it had to be bad tubing, but he wasn't 100% sure. But he said he'd order the part and come back to install it. He came back with the part on 5/31/23 but he had ordered the wrong part for this particular LG model. He then told me he had to order another part and grumbled something about how these machines aren't built like they used to be. So he had to order yet another part and said he would come back to install it. He told me/us to leave everything just as it was, loose parts and all and he put everything on top of the refrigerator. He left the water turned off from behind the fridge and left the fridge pulled out into the middle of the kitchen and said to just leave everything that way and he'd be back the next week to install the new part. I told him I'd be out of town the following week, but my husband and daughter would be there to let him in to work on it. He said that's fine and I gave him my husband's cell number as a contact to call him on the day that he would be headed to our home. I left town the following week (gone 6/6 through 6/11). I talked to my family every day and asked had the repairman come back, and it was 'no' for the entire week. When I got back on 6/11, I was busy with everything and noticed by 6/14 that Woody still had not come nor called about the follow-up service appointment. At that point, it was going on 2 full weeks that our refrigerator had parts scattered on top of the appliance and was in the middle of the floor, with everyone walking around it because Woody said to leave it as is and he'd be right back. I finally called him on 6/15 and asked when was he coming back out to fix the fridge. He stated that he was very busy with other calls and the soonest he could come back out would be on that Friday, 6/16. On 6/16, he didn't show up or call. I called him again to find out what was going on and he told me that he's busy and I don't know what it's like to be 70 years old and trying to retire! Wow, is all I could say. He then offered to just mail me the part that he had ordered, and I said that's fine, please mail it. I figured if he mailed it on the 16th, and since the 19th was a federal holiday and the mail wouldn't run, I should at least get it by the 23rd. Well by the 21st, nothing had come in the mail. So I called him AGAIN to see what was going on. I called Woody on 6/21 and said "you were supposed to mail me the part." He said he totally forgot and that he would just come back out on Thursday, 6/22 and install the new part and put everything back together. On 6/22, it was after 12:00 and he still hadn't come. I called Woody to ask him what time should I expect him so I can be sure that someone would be here. He said 2:00. About an hour after that call, he called me back and asked me about my work order and if it had a description of the service on it. He said he couldn't find his copy. I told him everything that was on the work order. THAT was when he aggressively stated to me that he was NOT going to come back out to fix my appliance, he told me to get someone else to do it and that he would refund my money. I was shocked! I asked well are you at least going to come back and put the refrigerator back together?? He said NO. I'm not coming back out and I'm not going to fix it. I stammered and said, wait, wait, how can you not come back out, NOT fix the appliance, NOT mail me the part and NOT give me a refund (although he said he would do it, I never got the money back and it's been a week and a half now?? He hung up the phone in my face, and when I tried and tried calling back, he sent me to voicemail. I tried calling from my husband's phone and he still wouldn't answer. I tried calling from my work phone, no answer, but he called back and when he heard my voice, he hung up again. Totally unprofessional and cowardice! Bottom line, money wasted, time wasted and I still had to call another repair service and pay double because they had to reassemble the unit first just to try to figure out what the initial problem was. If Woody couldn't fix the appliance, he should've stated that early on. He took my money and breached the contract. According to the fine print on his work order, he does owe me a refund, but I'll probably never get it. But if I can help someone else avoid dealing with this shady, unscrupulous person, that's good enough for me. Save your frustration."

Ge Appliance Repair questions, answered by experts

The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Twenty years in, that plan should be well underway rather than waiting for the unit to die.

Routine checks, cleaning, and following manufacturer guidelines enhance longevity.

You can usually use an oven until it stops working. As oven technology continues to develop, the stress of heat will affect the oven less, and it will last longer than older models. At around the 8—to 10-year mark, if you see no signs of damage, it’s probably wise to hire a local appliance professional to check your oven.

Your refrigerator's age plays a big role in determining if you should repair or replace a refrigerator when you need to cover ice maker repair costs. With the average life expectancy of a refrigerator at 14 years, paying to repair an ice maker in a unit that's anywhere from 10 to 18 years old might not be a smart investment because there's no guarantee that a more expensive repair involving another refrigerator component won't pop up soon. Get a diagnosis before you make a decision. In some cases, a replacement drive blade, valve, or fill tube could cost just $75.

Choosing a unit with higher BTUs can use more electricity if the BTUs are more than what’s necessary for your room size. However, choosing an AC with BTUs that match the size of your room or house, your unit will cool your space efficiently. On the flip side, choosing a system with not enough BTUs can cause the system to work harder to try to cool the space, leading to more electricity consumption and higher energy bills.
