He arrived promptly for the appt., was pleasant and seemed professional. When he gave me an estimate, I asked for it in writing and he told me he usually just did a handshake agreement. This should have been my red flag. I did insist on a written agreement. He returned with a sloppy handwritten estimate. Insurance only paid $2600 for the interior damage. The total cost was approx. $7600. I was out of pocket $5000. I gave Mr. Merritt the money up front for the materials. During the repair process, he asked for money to pay his employees, which I gave him. The work was completed in a timely manner, except for some finishing work on the ceiling inside. He told me he would return to finish that, which he never did. He left his supplies as if he were returning soon. He never finished. I called him and asked when he was going to return to finish. He told me he was finished. I reminded him about the ceiling and he told me he forgot. He had already moved on to another job, but would return to finish. He never did. About two months later, the roof started leaking again. I called Mr. Merritt to let him know. He came out and spread some sealant on the seams, but it continued to leak. I called again. He said he would return and never did. He then stopped answering my calls, nor did he return them. I had to get my husband to call from his phone. Mr. Merritt answered his call because he didn't recognize the number. I got on the phone and had a heated discussion with Mr. Merritt. He promised me he would make things right. I did not hear from Mr. Merritt for a year and a half even after numerous attempts to contact him. He finally came by to assess the problem but never returned. That was the last contact with Mr. Merritt we have had. I have tried to contact him but to no avail. Now the leaks are worse than before he attempted the repair. Totally disgusted with the experience with Mr. Merritt. Now I have no other options but to take legal action. They were always very good and outperformed their estimates. I have also moved several times in my life with various large PROFESSIONAL moving companies. This move turned out to be the worst and most expensive move, for the distance moved, I have ever gone through. They showed up with two trucks and four young men. You pay per hour by truck plus supplies. We were having them pack some of our items and we had packed some of our items. We were paying for each box they used. It turned out that only one of the movers somewhat knew how to pack boxes. The other three were completely clueless. The person that somewhat knew what he was doing was also in charge of the move. If one of the other guys had a question he was pulled away from what he was doing. After being at our home for several hours and they had not even finished packing our kitchen items, the leader called their office and asked for some additional help. This move was supposed to take one eight hour day. Later someone from their office (supervisor) came to our home with additional boxes and also looked at how far the TEAM had progressed. After looking over everything he came to me and told me they would have to return the next day to finish up with everything and they would bring people that knew what they were doing. That meant that I would have to pay for an additional day for four people and I would have to pay a higher rate because it was going to be on a Friday. I had no choice at that point because they had most of our furniture loaded on a truck and I had to be out of the house by Sunday. On Friday they came back and the other truck did have one person that somewhat knew what he was doing. They continued to pack boxes and pack furniture. At this point all I could think about how this was costing me $220/hr on Thurs. and on Friday it was costing $226/hr. When we moved into the house we were moving out of we used a PROFESSIONAL mover. It took three Men a full day to pack everything and load the moving van and then drive from North Georgia to Birmingham, Alabama this is about a three hour drive. When they got to Birmingham they unload everything and set up beds and other items they had taken apart. Bottom line at the end of the move, it cost much more than it would have if they knew what they were doing. When we started to un-box things we noticed how a lot of the boxes we paid for had very little in them. We also noticed that some of our kitchen items were missing. We also noticed that some of the boxes were double boxed because they used the wrong type of box to pack with. We also noticed that several of the Wardrobe boxes were used before ($14.00 ea.). We also had some broken items in the boxes. I was so mad I didn't want to send their survey back, because it would have been very heated. But what made me finally write this review, I have a professional desk, that I paid over $3700 for, they had moved to a storage unit for us. This unit has several pieces that bolt together. The desktop is supported on one end by a cabinet (they unbolted there) and the other end it is attached by two bolts to a support leg (they did not unbolt). When they put the desk top into the storage unit they put the support leg flat on the floor with the desk top straight up in the air. This caused pressure on the two bolts and at some point the desk top broke off of the support leg. This made a $3700 desk useless. Their policy says they are not responsible for items stored in a storage unit. This move ended up costing me more to move 6 miles than a move 3 years earlier to move 220 miles. I will never use them again and I would strongly urge you to use someone else. It only cost $350 for a full inspection and it was well worth it. He inspected the outside, inside, crawl space, attic, and all electrical, plumbing, and heating/air. It took him around 2 hours for the inspection and he sat down with me for around 30 minutes and told me everything he found, how to fix it, and what the cost may be. In less than 24 hours, I had access to his report with pictures and everything he found wrong with the house. He was very thorough and very knowledgeable. My wife noticed that the air conditioner was not blowing cold air. The inside unit was running, but the outside unit was not. We called another AC contractor to come out and take a look. The AC contractor told us that the wire to the compressor was burned up and it had ruined the compressor. He told us we could replace the compressor or replace the whole unit, including the air handler inside. He told my wife that if we replaced the compressor, it would likely not be as efficient due to manufacturing changes because of the newer federal regulations. We asked for a quote on a new unit and the quote to replace outside unit, coils, and inside unit with a Trane XR15 was above $13k ($11K if paying with cash or check and $13k if financing). That sounded very high to me so we started seeking a 2nd and 3rd estimate. We called Brian at Active for the 2nd estimate. He came out to give an estimate and noticed that the wire to the compressor was charred. He repaired or replaced the wire and told my wife that the compressor was fine. She started up the system and it started running like a champ. Brian checked our freon and asked more questions about the system and told us that the system should last several more years. Brian didn't even charge us to repair the wire because he had come out to give an estimate. We asked him to give us an estimate to repair another unit that has been down for a couple of years. Brian was prompt, professional, honest, and very nice."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/al/calera/active-air-inc-reviews-2064630.htm"},"position":9},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"ARCTIC AIR & HEAT","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"AL","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Yolanda H."},"reviewBody":"We had serveral companies work on our hvac. FAQs for heating oil service projects in Leighton, AL
To buy heating oil for your house, contact local heating oil companies to compare prices and place an order once you decide on a supplier. The company will have to deliver your heating oil in a truck designed to carry and dispense heating oil safely. Call and order your heating oil early enough to have your oil delivered before you need to start using it for home heating.
On average, you’ll need about two gallons of oil per day to heat your house when it’s 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Most oil tank capacity is about 275 gallons, and heating your house with two gallons of oil per day will last about four and a half months. This consumption will vary depending on the climate and average temperature in your location. For example, if the winters are longer and colder where you live, you’ll probably need to refill your oil tank at least once to get through the winter.
You save money on heating oil in a few ways:
Make sure your home is well insulated and sealed against drafts and heat leakage.
Use a thermostat that’s working properly and calibrated accurately.
Program your thermostat to lower the heat when you’re not home.
Order heating oil during the off-season when prices are likely to be lower.
Summer months tend to be when heating oil prices are lowest because of decreased demand. Buying heating oil during the off-season also prepares you for when the weather gets cold, and you need to start using the oil to heat your home. Although heating oil prices will fluctuate, it’s best to avoid purchasing between September and April, as that's the peak season for heating oil demand.
Overall, heating your home with an oil furnace tends to be less expensive than heating your home with an electric heating system. Oil heating systems stay warm for longer periods of time without drawing a constant electrical current to maintain a temperature. Plus, heating oil systems typically have a longer lifespan and lower price tag than their electrical counterparts, resulting in short- and long-term savings.
