"I highly recommend James R. Maxwell & Associates! Mr. Maxwell is very knowledgeable, professional, and holds to the highest standard of quality and ethics. He is better than any builder that we have previously worked with. Mr. Maxwell's associate, Matt, holds to the same standards. Matt initially started repairing multiple fascia, soffit, and other roof repairs. After he started, he noticed other things that should be addressed. Not to upsell, but simply make me aware to help prevent future issues in a home we recently purchased. No pressure at all. After that, Mr. Maxwell came out to assess the additional work and provide a quote. When Matt finished the initial work, he then rebuilt our chimney, fixed multiple window sills, along with several other things. I really appreciated them making me aware of the other issues and educating me on the proper repair process. They are both true professionals who look out for their clients. Lastly, they needed to use a lift to reach the third story on the high side of our roof. The lift left a few ruts in our yard that they assured me would be repaired. During the clean up, they brought in topsoil, broke up and flattened the ruts, spread a thick coat of grass seed, covered with straw, and repaired a sprinkler. The amount of time and effort Matt put into ensuring our yard was repaired properly, was just like the work performed on our home. I was very impressed. We are very appreciative of Mr. Maxwell and Matt. We look forward to doing business with them again!"

"Very happy! Back story….Our house (we are/were this first owners but it was not built for us) was sided with fiber cement. It falling apart after 17 years. Chipped corners, nails backing out, etc. Not to mention the builder had cut corners. We chose to replace it with premium insulated vinyl siding but it was found that the house had not sheathed with proper OSB sheathing (it was more like a 3-4mm thick, dense cardboard) in order vinyl siding to be put up. Also, we found out the windows had not sealed/flashed at all and this caused water damage to some of the lower floor studs underneath the windows all which needed to replaced. This was an extensive process (and $$$). Needless to say all was corrected and siding went up and looks fantastic! Would definitely recommend!"

"Incredible experience. The owner, Evans, personally met with me for a free estimate and asked me questions I hadnâ t even thought about. He was extremely responsive the entire time. The painting crew was extremely kind, professional, and courteous. They did an outstanding job on my cabinets! And I even asked them to add something that I forgot to mention at the beginning and they fixed my crown molding for free! Truly cannot recommend them enough- very easy to work with. Worth every dollar. And their prices were extremely reasonable- much less than I originally expected. Do yourself a favor and hire CertaPro."

Customers say: True professional

"After waiting 7 months for Lowe’s to install and wrap my windows I finally gave up! I did a goggle search and Residential Facelift came up right away. Robert was sympathetic to the problems that I was experiencing at Lowe’s and agreed to help me right away. He came out the very next week and installed my windows. The next week he had one of his employees come out and do the wrapping. He even matched the price I already had! My install date for Lowe’s is January 22. I was told I couldn’t schedule a date for wrapping until the install was done. Which would have been another 6 weeks! Thank God I found Robert! The house is a flip and I was desperate! They did an awesome job! Would definitely hire again!"

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

Siding questions, answered by experts

The main differences between dutch lap versus clapboard siding have to do with their design and texture. Clapboard siding features flat, beveled planks stacked at a slight angle, offering a simple, traditional look. Dutch lap siding features a subtly concave surface along with a notch that creates a shadowed look between the boards. This eye-catching design often resembles wood grain and introduces a noticeable shadow line, making it more visually interesting compared to the simpler look of clapboard siding.

Avoid toxic chemicals that can leach into nearby lawns, as well as household ingredients like vinegar that can ruin paint and sealants. Instead, look for a very light detergent or a dedicated exterior siding cleaner. In a pinch, you can use a basic dish or laundry soap, but we suggest sticking with a dedicated cleaner.

If your siding is struggling with algae or moss, which indicates moisture issues, look for an outdoor cleaner that’s specifically designed to clear moss and algae stains. This is also a sign that you need to seal your clapboard against further problems.

Some homeowners use caulk on the edges of clapboard siding to help seal it. However, this method invites new problems. With so many gaps sealed, clapboard siding is often unable to drain properly and moisture from rain or other sources can build up inside. This can lead to rot and other issues over time. When repairing clapboards, it’s best to avoid caulking the final product. The exception is trim around windows and doors, which should be caulked to avoid moisture problems.

Both vinyl and metal are very popular siding options, and it’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each before making a decision for your home. Vinyl has a lower price point than metal and is easier to install, but metal siding is more durable, longer-lasting, and requires much less maintenance. The upfront costs could save you money in the long run.

You may only need to repaint fiber cement siding every decade or so, but you should clean it every six to 12 months, depending on your local climate. First, wash with a garden hose or similar low-pressure device (not a high-pressure washer, which can damage the material) to remove dirt and any large debris. Then, gently wipe down the surface with a soft brush or cloth in a side-to-side motion, following the grain of the fiber cement.
