"This was an addition on Mobile Bay. New master bedroom and bath, new living area, screened porch. New roof and siding throughout. The Project was not without complication, permits, surveys, inspections, window delivery delays, to mention a few. Throughout all this we worked very well together. Communication from the contractor was excellent at all times, explaining the issues and working with us on the solutions. Despite the challenges, the work was completed on budget."

"Richard and his team were incredible! I requested a quote for a deck and to remove a broken up patio, and Richard came out within a couple of hours to give us a quote, which was fair priced. He gave me a suggestion of what we could do to cover up the broken up patio, and also told me he could do concrete work to repair an uneven sidewalk block near our driveway. There were some things that did not go Richard and his team's way during the process that were entirely out of their control, but their team stopped at nothing to make sure that the job was done correctly and to our satisfaction. I would trust them with any future home improvement project because of their commitment to making sure their customers are satisfied."

"so far so good Joe is extremely knowledgeable, professional, courteous; and is a 'can-do!' contractor. He arrived on site as planned and immediately got to work to assess and initiate repairs. At the time of this writing, we have more to go; but have already planned dates and times for completion of project. I am very happy that he is on the job- completely reliable and excellent work. Highly recommend."

"Lewis was very friendly and professional. Great communication! He got the 3 rooms painted quickly and they look great. One of the rooms had a spot that dripped and he came back and fixed it the next business day. He cleaned up his mess so well you wouldn't even know he had been here. Highly recommend!"

"This contractor was the most responsive as noted in the timeline below.
Unfortunately, while in the final stages of the bid comparison process, this contractor withdrew their bid citing they were awarded a large job out of town.
As part of the bid comparison process I sent each contractor a list of questions and clarifications.  This contractor answered most of my questions but not all.  In fact there was but one contractor who responded to every question, which is the contractor I have selected to complete the replacement of my roof.
Timeline
30 July 2015:  Late Thursday night I contacted the contractor and requested a quotation.  The contractor responded the same night nothing they would call me the next day in order to arrange a time to view the job.
31 July 2015:  On Friday, as promised, the contractor called and left me a voice message requesting a time to walk the job.  I returned the call around noon and we scheduled the visit for the following day - Saturday.
01 August 2015:  Two representatives from the company arrived at the predetermined time and immediately went to work walking the job down.  They were very friendly and seemed quite knowledgeable regarding the work to be done.  They answered all my questions and made several recommendations for ensuring I received a quality roof replacement and a couple of areas I would be able to save money on the job.  The quotation was prepared onsite and provided to me before they left the property.
02 August 2015:  I received a message from the contractor apologizing for failing to provide me with the discount offered all Angie's List members.  I was told to subtract the discount amount from my total.
30 August 2015:  On this Sunday night after reviewing all of my proposals, and in an attempt to ensure all were apples-to-apples, I sent each contractor a list of questions regarding their quotations.  As previous, this contractor was very punctual and responded to several of my questions the same night.  However, I noticed responses to a couple of the important questions had been overlooked. (see notes at top of page)
01 September 2015:  I sent the contractor a follow up email noting a couple of the questions had been overlooked in the initial response and asked that a response be provided as soon as possible.
02 September 2015:  I received a message via Angie's List and a phone message stating they must withdraw their bid due to being awarded a job out of town.  They apologized and assured me I would be in good hands "with the other contractors."

"What a great experience. He did the work on a Sunday which others seldom do. The job was completed professionally and he cleaned up afterwards. Additionally, he went to Home Depot himself and purchased additional trim. Extremely conscientious. I will definitely hire again."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.
