"Lewis was professional, courteous, friendly, and helpful. He answered any questions I had, suggested things that would prevent other problems, and helped me with other improvements I was working on. My phone calls were either answered or returned within the hour. Anything I pointed out was taken care of. Prep work began 3 days after our initial meeting and painting soon followed. All work was done by Lewis with some prep work and painting done by Buddy. I had other contractors working in my home, and Lewis and Buddy worked around them. I am very happy with the results and would definitely hire HCP again. "
We wanted to remodel our newly purchased condo but didn't think we'd be able to afford all the projects we had in mind because of the limitations of our budget. A couple of local contractors in Gulf Shores had estimated a minimum cost of $40,000. We contacted Help-Around-the-House based on favorable Angie's List reviews and found that they more than live up to their great reputation. Dan Parks and his team worked closely with us from start to finish, not only helping us to stay within our budget but also coming up with ideas that were better than what we originally had in mind. All of the work was of high quality, yet it was done amazing fast. We couldn't be more satisfied with the final result. We definitely recommend Dan Parks and the Help-Around-the-House team to anyone who wants high quality work done at a fair price.

"This contractor was the most responsive as noted in the timeline below. Unfortunately, while in the final stages of the bid comparison process, this contractor withdrew their bid citing they were awarded a large job out of town. As part of the bid comparison process I sent each contractor a list of questions and clarifications. This contractor answered most of my questions but not all. In fact there was but one contractor who responded to every question, which is the contractor I have selected to complete the replacement of my roof. Timeline 30 July 2015: Late Thursday night I contacted the contractor and requested a quotation. The contractor responded the same night nothing they would call me the next day in order to arrange a time to view the job. 31 July 2015: On Friday, as promised, the contractor called and left me a voice message requesting a time to walk the job. I returned the call around noon and we scheduled the visit for the following day - Saturday. 01 August 2015: Two representatives from the company arrived at the predetermined time and immediately went to work walking the job down. They were very friendly and seemed quite knowledgeable regarding the work to be done. They answered all my questions and made several recommendations for ensuring I received a quality roof replacement and a couple of areas I would be able to save money on the job. The quotation was prepared onsite and provided to me before they left the property. 02 August 2015: I received a message from the contractor apologizing for failing to provide me with the discount offered all Angie's List members. I was told to subtract the discount amount from my total. 30 August 2015: On this Sunday night after reviewing all of my proposals, and in an attempt to ensure all were apples-to-apples, I sent each contractor a list of questions regarding their quotations. As previous, this contractor was very punctual and responded to several of my questions the same night. However, I noticed responses to a couple of the important questions had been overlooked. (see notes at top of page) 01 September 2015: I sent the contractor a follow up email noting a couple of the questions had been overlooked in the initial response and asked that a response be provided as soon as possible. 02 September 2015: I received a message via Angie's List and a phone message stating they must withdraw their bid due to being awarded a job out of town. They apologized and assured me I would be in good hands "with the other contractors."
"Brian and his crew were great! Not only did he communicate with us to make sure everyone stayed in the loop, the crew showed up when they said they'd be there, and did a fantastic job! Hands down one of the easiest and best contractors I've worked with for home projects. Recommend without hesitation."

"Dearman construction did not disappoint! Very punctual! By far the best customer service and their experience and knowledge of the job requested was outstanding, if you need ANYTHING done from roofing, decking to tile Dearman Construction are the people to go to! Would recommend this business to anyone looking for top notch contractors. Would refer these people to my own family!"
"In each case, we chose not to use this contractor because the price was higher than other estimates and the nature of the work did not require the level of expertise that they would bring to the job. As a result we hired less expensive contractors who did a job with less quality but served the purpose we wanted to accomplish.
I would definitely recommend Grantwood Contracting for any job but especially one that is complex and desire quality end results."
Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts
It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.
Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.
Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.
Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.
Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.
Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.
