"Amos, of Eichers Cabinet Installs and his partner had my 2 cabinets raised, leveled and re-secured to the wall in 30 minutes. My cabinets had loosened from the wall and dropped about an inch, causing misalignment of the double doors on each unit. When I posted my cabinet repair needs on Angi on one evening, he responded to me immediately on the next morning. He set up a time for service on a Saturday afternoon, and was at my house when he said he would be. He figured out the problem with my cabinets quickly. "Subcontractors were mostly good, but management of them was lacking. I had to personally supervise them because the on site contractor rarely stayed very long. Told the trim finish crew to leave because they did not know how to install crown molding. Got another crew that knew what they were doing. They never asked for periodic payments during the job (as is typical); presented one huge bill at the end. Holland homes builds nice homes, but I would not recommend them for small jobs like mine because you do not get the best crews and you have to wait for them to fit you into their schedule."

You can use a variety of wood to build a barn door, but the most common options include 1-by boards and 2-by boards for the backing and the decorative boards on the front of the door. Softwoods like pine will save you some money and should hold up well, while hardwoods like maple and oak will stand up to more wear and tear. You could also build the backer out of plywood to minimize the cuts you need to make. Whatever you decide on, make sure the width of the wood is compatible with the mounting brackets you buy.

To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

You don’t need to shim both sides of a door, but it’s always a good idea. Wall framing is rarely perfectly plumb, and shims let you make minor adjustments to get your door perfectly level and plumb. This will ensure the door swings open and closes smoothly. You can also use shims on both sides of the door you’re installing or adjusting to center it in the wall opening.
