"I had Artistic Finish finish an install on a door project that my husband and I started Saturday. We have done a lot of construction in the past but this door was a real bugger. Chuck came in and immediately saw the problem and knew exactly what to do to accomplish the fit of the door. He was fast affordable, efficient, and professional. I would and will use him again on other projects that we have pertaining to my house or my rentals. I will recommend his company to my co-workers and family for construction they need help with. Amanda Vanderwood I have used Servicemagic 3 times and I would recommend it to my friends and co-workers t"

Small jobs welcome

"Great Folks - Shane did an amazing job with what he had to work with. He had to do a retrofit job on one cabinet that was ordered with the wrong dimensions for our micro/convection oven - it turned out perfectly. Another issue with a space between cabinets and he made it look fabulous. Shane and his son Tristan were prompt and on task with the job the entire time - attention to detail oriented. We still have a little to finish up we are just waiting for additional cabinetry and the countertop. I will put up pictures when all is completed. Mary & Clayton"

From the builder meeting to each stage of the build to the completed project, Walker listened to all my preferences and concerns and was sure to tailor the greenhouse to my exact needs. I would highly recommend WPS for your construction needs and will absolutely hire him again in the future."

Doors questions, answered by experts

Installing a dog door is generally a straightforward process that handy DIYers may feel comfortable attempting on their own. Because the process usually involves cutting a hole in your existing door or wall, some homeowners may prefer to hire a handyperson who has experience with this type of installation to ensure the job is done right.

When choosing a door for the space between your garage and house, steel is your best bet for fire safety. While wood—and sometimes glass—doors are common, they have lower fire-ratings. Fire-rated steel doors can withstand flames for up to three hours—double what wood can manage (90 minutes). Glass, while non-combustible, can crack under extreme heat. Steel may cost more, but it also offers the best protection. Steel isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing choice, but as long as your door meets the International Residential Code (IRC) standards, it’ll do its job in protecting your family and home.

Spacing a door is tricky since you need to leave enough of a gap for the door to move freely and not get stuck when the slab and frame contract and expand in dry and humid conditions. The ideal gap between a doorframe and slab is 1/8 of an inch. If the gap is any larger, the door will feel drafty. But if the gap is any smaller, the slab can get stuck due to weather changes.

To choose the best door, start by pinpointing its most important job in your home, then choose the material and style based on that function. Simply put, there’s a world of difference between what an interior bedroom door and driveway-facing entryway door do for your home. Thinking about your door's purpose first, then its look and style, will help you make the right choice and stay on budget.

Standard door sizes aren’t one-size-fits-all, but there are common go-to dimensions. For exterior doors—like your front door—36 inches wide by 80 inches tall is typical, though you’ll see 30- or 32-inch widths too, especially in older homes. Interior doors vary more. Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. Height is usually 80 inches across the board; however, always measure your actual opening. “Standard” only works if it matches what’s already in place.
