We were impressed by his can-do attitude and skills. For example, he didn't just hang the "barn door" style sliding door for the laundry room, but he also added a piece to extend the too-short door that I really wanted to use, and made sure it would operate smoothly by adding a spacer and recessing the screws on the back. He trimmed out a couple of interior doors and used a corner tool to make sure that the corners would turn out perfect (looks much better than the ones done by the "big box store" crew). He also did a beautiful job using neodymium magnets to fit panels into a custom desk, fashioning an angled flooring transition strip for an awkward space, and he even fixed the cat's broken scratching post with a leftover scrap of wood. Now everyone is happy!
Josh genuinely seems to enjoy the challenge of figuring out solutions and has the skills and tools to follow through. He is efficient and personable, and we are looking forward to having him work on more projects in the future.
He got me the bid quickly and in the promised time frame. He said he could buy the lumber and I could pay him or, if I have a
rewards credit card, I could use that to buy the lumber myself (hello, AK Air Miles!). Either way it was the same cost. He called in the order then I called in to pay and to arrange delivery. He started the project on time and worked very fast (he is very efficient). He built the whole thing in 2 days (after the concrete was dry -- preparing and installing the concrete was done in one morning but then we had to wait days for it to dry). Both he and his assistant were very courteous. He kept me informed of the progress and let me know what to expect at each step (like the need to keep the dog off the wet concrete!). He noticed that my gate sagged a lot and was difficult to open. He offered to fix it while he was there for very little money because it was a quick fix for him.
My stairs are still holding strong a year later (just like new) and are exactly what I needed. I could not be more pleased with them.
On my indoor projects, he was very clean. He took his boots off at the door, he used drop cloths and the like to minimize mess, and he leaves the area clean. That is SO refreshing. He has attention to detail and makes sure everything is done right, no matter how small. I showed him all the things I needed done, he got all the parts and things he needed, and did almost everything in one day (some things like the drywall mud and tile had to dry before he could finish them).
Overall, he was very knowledgeable about materials, building codes, procedures for building and fixing things, and my options. He was very professional. Even though we had met socially before, he really put on his "contractor hat" and was in business mode when he came to do the quote and the work. I have since recommended him to others and one of my coworkers is a repeat customer who is also very pleased with him.
Note: I will disclose that I am presently (Oct. 2012) dating the owner of this business. However, at the time I hired him to build my deck stairs, I was not and had only just met him. When I met him, I told him that I needed stairs built, that I had just gotten a quote from a leading deck company in town that had done my neighbor's deck, and asked him for a quote. He came in with a quote lower than the other company. After checking his references and looking at his portfolio of other work, I contracted him to do the work. I am receiving no compensation or other incentive for writing this review. I have only including in this review the projects that I have hired him to do and compensated him for, though all of the things he has done since as part of my "honey-do" list have been excellent! As much as I'd like to think he worked so hard just to impress me, I know from seeing his other work that he is just an excellent contractor.
Josh gave us the option to save from his original quote if we shopped and purchased the lumber ourselves.
It took some time to find the matching trex facia so we are glad we did that shopping ourselves (saving on labor rate)
Part of the total charges were for driving the 100 mile RT to our home.
Josh was very responsive and we feel his rate was reasonable/fair.
He showed up on time did an Excellent job and was courteous and preofessional.
The weather was horrid but he cheerfully worked in the rain and wind to get the job done and did it RIGHT!
While we paid more for an Anchorage based contractor to come to Palmer, we feel it was money well spent to get quality workmanship.
Renovations Unlimited is now #1 on our list of preferred contractors.
