"Unbelievable service. Called them at 1.30 to repair a gas fireplace. They arrived at 4 after keeping me updated as to when they would be arriving. The repair person was pleasant, informative and knew exactly what was required to get it repaired. He needed a part for the repair and said he would be back the next day to complete the job. That evening I was emailed an update, confirming what the repair person had told me. The next day at 4 I received a text that the repair person would be there at 7pm with the part that needed replacing. At 8.04 I received another text saying the job had been completed. The following morning I received the invoice and could pay online. For any new home problems I will be contacting them immediately. I have never had such prompt, professional and competent service."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Modern wood-burning stoves are very effective, reaching around 80% efficiency. That’s because models built after 1988 are designed to meet standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to operate more efficiently and produce less air pollution. If you have an older wood stove, it may not be as efficient.

Yes, burning wood with Dutch elm disease is a safer way to dispose of it than, say, tossing it in with the rest of your yard waste, which could potentially allow it to spread to healthy trees. But it’s always a good idea to check with your local government to make sure you’re complying with any ordinances about removing diseased trees as well as burning brush piles.

There are a handful of things you can look out for that indicate fireplace repair is necessary in your home:

  • See or smell smoke in your home during use.

  • You smell gas or unusual odors coming from your fireplace.

  • The fireplace is visibly damaged or crumbling.

  • The igniter won’t light.

  • You notice shaling (pieces of chimney lining) building up in your fireplace.

  • Any portion of the fireplace is rusted.

  • You notice efflorescence (white stains) on the brick.

If any of these signs emerge or you suspect that you have an issue, call in a fireplace repair professional immediately.

Beyond having an inspection, it’s important to do chimney maintenance at least annually to be certain the chimney is safe to use. Cleaning the flue of any built-up particles, creosote, and soot reduces the risk of fire. Fortunately, the cost of hiring a pro to do a chimney inspection often includes a chimney cleaning, so you may not have an extra expense for maintenance.

In many cases, it is worth repairing an old fireplace. You can repair any portion of the fireplace, and even extensive repairs will usually cost less than a full replacement. Most fireplace repairs cost around $600 and top out around $2,500. Replacing your fireplace will cost around $2,500 and reach as high as $4,000. Not only will fireplace repair save you money in most cases, but the process is also much less invasive and time-consuming, so you’ll only have to set aside one day to be home for the work rather than multiple days.
