"This family run business did an excellent job on our front porch and back deck with a pergola! They were willing to come from Evanston on a Saturday to give a quote on our projects. Jennifer went out of her way to help us find a pergola that would work for what we wanted on our deck. She also gave us ideas for our bench seating and had pictures for us to look at. Del did the job of 2 or 3 men! He took the time to make sure everything was just right and exactly how we wanted it to look. Jennifer made quick runs to Ogden to help us get storm doors we wanted and any other materials that Del needed. There was great communication and we knew we could call anytime if we had a question or concern. We would definitely refer them to others and even asked for their business cards so we could pass them out to others in our community."

"Dutch & helper, Mike, arrived as promised . Work proceeded on schedule , only to be interupted by heavy rains. Work quality is very good. Some problems were encoutered but Dutch was ready with the solutions bringing peace of mind and high standards. Many frends & neighbors have stopped by to view our new deck and have been very impressed. The heavy snows we get in western Wy. will prove the real quality of the work. If all is well come springtime I will give a FIVE STAR rating."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

For a 12x20-foot (240-square-foot) deck, you can expect to pay between $7,200 and $14,400. This cost is based on a general price of $30 to $60 per square foot. The final price will depend on factors such as the decking material, design complexity, deck type, location, and local labor costs. Keep in mind that add-ons will increase the total; for example, adding an under-deck drainage system to a deck of this size could cost an additional $7,700.

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

A deck is typically attached to a house and accessed via the back door. Decks are usually constructed from wood or composite materials. A terrace, on the other hand, is a raised platform that can be attached to or detached from the house and is typically made from a hard-paved material, such as paving stones. Terraces can be built on the ground or on the roof of a home.

No, you don’t need a permit to repair and replace a few boards on an existing deck. However, if you’re making structural changes to the deck or tearing down the old one and building a new one, you will likely need a permit. Check with your local municipality for the regulations and rules in your area, or ask a local contractor who builds decks for advice.
