It’s usually best to transplant a tree when it’s dormant. For some, the best option is transplanting during fall after the leaves have fallen—October or November. In other cases, it’s best to transplant before new growth begins in the spring, often around March. But avoid transplanting during winter because the soil is harder and colder, and the tree won’t have the same chance to acclimate. 

It may not be worth it to rake every leaf in your yard, but it’s necessary to remove the majority of leaves to prevent them from smothering grass growth on your lawn. However, raking leaves isn’t your only option for leaf removal. Once you confirm a tree is dead, you should remove it. Dead trees eventually fall, and larger trees in particular can cause damage to rooftops, fencing, flowers, and other objects. As we mentioned, letting decayed wood stay in your yard also invites risks to the surrounding landscaping and vegetation.

Unless there’s some sort of rule in your community’s homeowners’ association that requires you to remove a stump, there’s no law that says you have to take it out. If you’re not wedded to the idea of removing it, there are plenty of ways to get creative with this tree remnant. Using the stump as the medium for a wood carving or turning it into a planter are just two examples of ways to repurpose a tree stump.

Aside from aesthetic purposes, pruning removes dead or diseased branches which keeps trees healthy, strong, and encourages new growth. Pruning fruit trees at the right moment will even ensure that they produce more and better fruit when the time comes.
