The four most common types of stormwater drainage systems are ditches, catch basins, french drains, and slot drains. Ditches are open trenches designed to reroute stormwater off your property. Catch basins are connected to your local sewage system. French drains are great for keeping water out of your foundation, and slot drains are low-capacity drain systems that work best with light storms.

While both a channel drain and a French drain serve a similar purpose, a French drain is designed to prevent groundwater from causing flooding issues. This type of drain system goes underneath the soil and is completely surrounded by soil and rock. A channel drain, also called a trench drain, removes surface water before it ever enters the ground—hence the concrete and above-ground installation method.

French drains may fail when they become clogged with soil granules that slip through the pores of the landscaping fabric and through the holes in the pipe. 

Over time, this debris can build up inside the pipe and prevent water flow. To prevent this failure from happening, regularly flush out your French drain and keep debris away from the inlet grate.

You may have to dig out drain valves if they are buried under dirt. This method isn’t ideal, and it increases the chance of clogs and damage. Ideally, a drip irrigation system buries drain valves in a gravel pocket so they are easier to access and better-protected. If you have trouble accessing drain valves, hire a sprinkler professional to find them safely and efficiently.

Trench drains have a bit of a reputation as being difficult to clean, so if there’s a massive rainstorm that leads to a lot of debris and gunk getting stuck in the drain, you’ll spend extra time cleaning it out. Plus, you definitely need to regularly clean the drain, heavy rainstorms or not, to keep it in good condition, adding an extra step to your cleaning to-do list.
