"I hired JP and his Stars and Stripes employees to complete three projects at my home. First, my front and back porches needed repaired due to moisture damage. It was easy to communicate the problems I had. JP stopped by to evaluate these projects and provided estimates. He was able to point out possible causes of the water damage and ways to reduce future damage. I was able to work with him on the ordering of the supplies needed. Both porches look great! My last project was a complete bathroom remodel from the studs. I was able to work with JP on the planning and ordering of all bathroom supplies/accessories. They worked with me to ensure that I was able to get the bathroom remodel that I wanted!"

"Super service! We had a major leak and they came out before the rain the fix the roof. Very reasonable in cost, very polite workers, and an all around great business to deal with! They are lined up to do capping of our eves and put siding around. Then we are going to get the rest of our roof done along with our shed roof! Answered all my questions including ones not related to the job! Thank you so much!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

While you can technically install TPO roofing over an existing roof, it isn't always wise to do so. The more layers of material you add to your roof, the more weight it must support. You may also develop moisture issues by covering your existing roof with TPO. Your local building codes and regulations may actually require you to remove the existing roof before adding TPO, so check with your local municipality.

A roof's ability to handle snow depends on its strength and the snow's weight, as wet snow is much heavier than dry, fluffy snow. While designs in snowy regions often allow for 35 to 50 pounds per square foot, a general guideline is that a typical roof can withstand about four feet of fresh snow, two feet of packed snow, or just one inch of ice. Factors like the roof's age, slope, and support structure also affect its capacity; newer, sloped roofs generally hold more weight than older, flat ones. Ice and ice dams add significant, dangerous weight. Because capacity varies, it is best to contact a professional roofing contractor or the original builder to determine the maximum snow load for your specific home.

The exact weight of a bundle of shingles depends on the shingle type, manufacturer, and other factors. It can weigh anywhere between 45 and 800 pounds.

Skipping the installation of a drip edge or gutter apron can lead to significant water damage. Without this component, water is more likely to seep under roofing materials or leak behind gutters, damaging the fascia, soffits, siding, and even the interior of your home, such as the attic. Over time, this moisture can cause rot, mold, and deterioration. In colder climates, a missing drip edge also increases the risk of ice dams, which can lead to expensive repairs. A drip edge is an essential part of a roof's drainage system, and some local building codes may even require its installation to protect the home from water damage.

Sometimes, a local authority won’t approve a request for a roofing permit. This may be because of incomplete documentation, unclear project plans, processing delays, or insufficient communication. There may also be discrepancies with building codes.
