Starting out in the back of a van, Austin and his wife Linda, would cut keys, open safes, and help anyone who was locked out of their car. In 1980 they took their business to a new level by opening a store-front behind the infamous "pink elephant" and expanded their business to service the needs of the tri-state area and greater Charleston. Today, Austin's is still located behind the "pink elephant" and offers locksmith service to all areas of West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and southeastern Ohio.

When you take a key to a hardware store or a locksmith for copying, you can expect the key-cutting process to take as little as 30 seconds. The key copier will review your current key to decide on the correct blank. Then, your original key and the blank are inserted into a key duplication machine to cut an exact key copy. When it’s all said and done, you can have a new key in your hand in just a couple of minutes.

Using a combination of tools (often store-bought plumbing tools) and brute force, a burglar can easily snap the lock on a door. Snapping a lock aims to gain access to the cylinder inside, which holds the locking mechanism. Once the thief snaps the lock, they can pick the cylinder open and walk right in.

Typically, it can take around 15 minutes to rekey a lock. The time depends on the type of lock and how skilled you are at rekeying. The first time you rekey a lock, it may take a little longer. Once you get the hang of the process, it will move along much more quickly.

Locksmiths typically recommend using a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, instead of the popular oil-based lubricants you can purchase at almost any store. Dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating instead of attracting more dirt and debris like an oil-based lubricant. You can find these at a hardware store; some are made explicitly for lock use.

Although you should rekey your locks after moving into a new home, you may feel more comfortable replacing the locks entirely. Here are some other scenarios when you should replace your locks rather than rekey them:
