Austin's Key and Lock has served the Barboursville area for more than 30 years. Starting out in the back of a van, Austin and his wife Linda, would cut keys, open safes, and help anyone who was locked out of their car. In 1980 they took their business to a new level by opening a store-front behind the infamous "pink elephant" and expanded their business to service the needs of the tri-state area and greater Charleston. Today, Austin's is still located behind the "pink elephant" and offers locksmith service to all areas of West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and southeastern Ohio.

A deadbolt has a different design, construction, and security level than a regular lock. Lock bumping is a technique locksmiths use to quickly and quietly open a pin tumbler lock, typically found in most types of deadbolts. It involves inserting a specially crafted key, or bump key, into the lock and tapping or "bumping" it with a mallet or similar tool. The force applied causes the lock's pins to jump momentarily, allowing the lock to be turned and opened. Unfortunately, thieves also use this technique to break into homes. Luckily, products like a deadbolt strap will fortify your lock.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key: 

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key.
