Someone local had recommended him. And I really wouldn't want to use anyone else now. Rick is professional, courteous, reliable, honest, very experienced. I've scheduled annual cleanings since that first, and when the chimney didn't need it, he let me know it was clean and didn't charge me. He could have just gone through the motions and taken my money, and he didn't! That is something you don't get very often in this world. At some point I know we'll probably need to have maintenance done on the wood stove, and I'll go back to him for that, too. I have absolute confidence in his expertise. Being patient with scheduling service is worth it. This isn't a big business with a lot of employees, there is just one man, and he can get very, very busy. It can take a little while to get a call back sometimes in the busy season, but he also supplies an email address which he suggests using for follow-up in his voice mail. If you’re building the roof trusses yourself, which isn’t recommended, it will be more affordable than buying pre-built trusses. Trusses cost more because they use the same amount of material, but you’ll also be paying for the labor, as well as the delivery to your home. The short answer is, yes, cedar shakes do last longer than asphalt shingles. But the long answer is, it depends on maintenance. Asphalt shingles last about 20 years, while cedar shingles typically last about 30 years with proper maintenance. If they are very well maintained and installed in an area with a mild, drier climate, they can last up to 50 years.

You shouldn’t put a new roof underlayment over an old one for a few reasons. Old felt must be removed in order to assess the condition of your roof decking, such as rotting wood or other structural issues. Also, if your roofer doesn't install a fresh layer of felt as is required by shingle manufacturers, your warranty may be voided. Finally, old underlayment removal is often included in the cost of roof repair or replacement, so there's no real benefit to leaving it on before installing a new layer.

Just like when you’re shingling a roof, you can install felt underlayment under a metal roof, but a synthetic underlayment like adhered ice and water shield is the best option. These use adhesives rather than mechanical fasteners, so you have fewer penetrations going through your roof deck and a lower risk of leaks. Ice and water shield is also easier to install because you don’t need additional tools or fasteners to attach it to the roof deck.

The minimum recommended slope for a porch roof is 1/4:12, which means 1/4-inch of rise every 12 inches of run. Slopes of 3:12 and 4:12 are more common and provide faster drainage for runoff. Make sure to choose a pitch that’s appropriate both for the climate in your area and the type of roof material you install. Hire a roofer if you need help determining what the right roof pitch is.
