"Cornerstone delivered outstanding work on our roof from start to finish. Their customer service was exceptional—responsive, professional, and attentive from the initial contact through completion and even during follow-up. The entire project was completed in just one day without sacrificing quality, and the pricing was very fair for such high-caliber workmanship. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable, top-quality roofing services."

"Robert and his crew did a first rate job replacing the roof and skylights of the kitchen lean-to attached my 270 year old stone farmhouse. Robert introduced me to Inspires Rubberized slate roof tiles, which from all outward appearances are identical to the slate tiles on the main roof - but have the added benefit of being able to withstand being walked on. - and anyone with a 270 year old stone farmhouse knows - that walking on the roof is part and parcel to regular farmhouse maintance - as something ALWAYS needs to be painted somewhere!!! A great Job Robert, Denny and Spanky. Thanks!!! :) jer"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The best roof replacement type depends on your budget and your particular climate, as well as your personal aesthetic. But in general, asphalt shingles are the best roof replacement type for homeowners looking for durability at a budget-friendly price. Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material—cost-effective, easy to install, lightweight, and the perfect choice for handy homeowners.

Sometimes chimney caps blow off during storms or fall off after rusting away. While this typically won’t cause structural damage, failing to replace a chimney cap can. A chimney cap prevents moisture, animals, and debris from entering your chimney, all of which can cause serious problems, such as damage to the masonry or blockages in the flue.

Generally, roof flashing is installed under the shingles to create a watertight seal and prevent moisture from seeping in and causing damage. However, the exact placement can depend on the type of flashing. For instance, with step flashing, the shingles and flashing overlap each other, meaning the flashing is technically both over and under the shingles. Flashing also typically goes beneath the house siding and is often not visible from the ground.

Gable vents are more common in older homes built before the 1970s. Homes built after this era use ridge vents or soffits, but you can sometimes find homes with both gable and ridge vents. Gable vents can have a purely aesthetic purpose, while ridge vents hide in the roof shingles so air can flow under the roof while keeping the attic dry.

If your home doesn't have gutters, you can still hang Christmas lights on the roof using specialized clips. Use roof clips designed to attach to shingles or fascia. For tile roofs or the edges of the rooftop, consider using parrot clips. Adhesive light-hanging clips are also a great option. It's important to avoid using nails or staples, as they can damage your roofing material. For unique or complex installations, it's best to consult a professional Christmas light installer to find the safest and most effective solution for your home.
