"Jason Miller called me the same day in response to my request on Home Advisor, and provided excellent help over the phone, at no cost. Then, he came to review the situation at our home the next day, on a Sunday afternoon. On Monday, the job (a temporary fix for the season) was completed; and, I am delighted! My husband and I struggled for 2 weeks attempting to find and figure out how to fix a leak. Other companies we contacted were too busy to be bothered and/or not helpful at all. Within 48 hours of talking to Jason, we went from a pool that was leaking terribly, shutdown, ugly and unusable, to a beautiful, clear operational pool with no leaking! I am so happy! The guys he sent to do the work were great; and, we will continue to use Millers Pool & Spa, and recommend them to everyone for future needs. Some individuals choose to run their hot tub without treatment at all and simply clean it more often (although you risk bacteria, fungi, and algae growth if you take this route); others use natural products like vinegar or Borax. Ozone, ultraviolet light, and electrolysis systems are also eco-friendly ways to have a clean hot tub without chemicals. Saltwater hot tubs are popular with people who are sensitive to chlorine, bromine, and other traditional hot tub chemicals.

Follow these general safety tips for spas and hot tubs:

  • Keep your exterior electrical receptacles covered and dry, especially around your hot tub and pool during periods of use.

  • Make sure you have a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) properly installed to ensure no one gets accidentally shocked or injured by electrocution. 

  • Don’t use the hot tub or your pool during a thunderstorm. 

  • Before using the hot tub, have a certified electrician thoroughly inspect your hot tub and its wiring to make sure you’re in full compliance with all applicable local building codes. 

You can drain a hot tub very quickly by using a submersible pump rather than the hose-sized drain at the bottom exterior of the tub. A pump can move up to 30 gallons per minute, draining your hot tub in no time. Using the regular drain can take up to two hours.

Where you drain a hot tub largely depends on local regulations, but you must not drain chemically treated water where it can damage the environment. Direct the water toward a sanitary sewer drain that will take it to a treatment facility. If your lawn has a dedicated drainage area that’s free from plants and foundations, you can likely drain it there. Avoid storm drains, as the hot tub water will enter waterways and could hurt aquatic life. Likewise, do not pour it out directly on any public land or where it can get into your neighbors’ property. 

Hot tub maintenance can cost between $500 and $1,000 annually. These costs typically cover deep cleaning the tub, refilling it several times a year, and maintaining the water's chemical balance. While you can perform maintenance yourself, a professional can clean and treat your hot tub with chemicals to save you time.
