While picking a standard chain-link fence might be your first instinct, that metal can easily rust over time, making your space look not-so-great. Black chain-link fences are a simple and affordable way to fence in an area of your yard and are also less prone to showing rust than traditional galvanized steel chain-link fences. Plus, black chain-link fencing is a more unique option that can look very striking and elegant when installed properly.

Ideally, when you replace a fence post, you should also replace the concrete footing. The concrete bonds to your new post, creating a secure base. If you install a new post into old concrete, it won’t be as sturdy.

That said, it is possible. Sometimes the post will lift right out of the concrete. If not, you can use a high-lift car jack to try and lift the pole out of the footing. Put the new post into the same hole and backfill it with fast-setting concrete. Keep in mind, this won’t work well for metal posts.

Standard post spacing for shadowbox fences is 6 to 8 feet. This spacing ensures proper support for the heavy weight of overlapping pickets and prevents sagging between posts. However, areas with high winds, slopes, or unstable soil conditions may require closer spacing.

Wood fences last an average of 15 years but can have a life span of 20 years or more depending on the type of wood used, your local weather, and how well you maintain it over the years. Pine fences will only last five to 10 years if untreated, but pressure-treated pine fences will get you to 20 years. Cedar’s natural resistance to the elements lends it to a remarkable lifespan of 40 years or more.

While power washing isn't a requirement before you stain a fence, it can make the job much easier and faster while reducing manual labor requirements. The stain will not work if the wood is full of dirt and dust, so power washing, sometimes called pressure washing, is a fast and effective way to prepare the wood for staining. Remember that you need to stain or repaint relatively soon after the wood has dried so that there isn’t time for dust and dirt to build up again.
