"I was extremely impressed by Oak Ridge Electric. Matt was able to come to my house the day after I spoke to him, he was very professional, reasonably priced and willing to handle the small job. He tested my existing light fixtures, tested my electrical and installed three new fixtures and I could not be happier. I highly recommend this business!"

"We contacted Matt to install an EV charger and a ceiling fan. Matt responded right away and scheduled an appointment. Matt showed up at the scheduled time and got right to work. We had previously had Oak Ridge do the electrical for our solar project. Both times work was done professionally. Oak Ridge will always be our preferred electrical contractor."

"The deal on Angie's list stated that wires would be "dressed." To me this means that the wires would be covered. There were wires sticking out all over and was extremely unsightly. I had to pay an additional fee to "dress the wires." When that was completed, it looked much much better. Unfortunately, the pictures below show how it looks now. Some wires are still exposed and the paint was chipped."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

No, both switches do not need to be on for a 3-way switch to work. When the two switches are in opposite positions, the circuit is open and the light is off. Flipping either switch closes the circuit and turns the light on. So, either switch can turn the light off independently, and both switches do not need to be in the same position for the switch to function.

It’s generally not recommended to run electric to a shed above ground, and you should instead run electric lines underground via a conduit. This job, like all electrical jobs, is best left to a pro, as they’ll need to ensure everything is installed safely and that they don’t run into any other utility lines underground.

If the outlet is a GFCI model, this is normal since these outlets have their own breakers that shut off when they encounter a problem—just hitting the reset button should solve the issue. Otherwise, the outlet could have bad wiring, or your circuit breaker could be having issues. If the issue started out of nowhere and is not on a GFCI outelt, it’s best to contact an electrician to diagnose the issue.

Yes, one wire is always hot on the 3-way switch, meaning it carries the electricity from the power source to the switch. If you have a 3-wire cable in your home, you have two hot wires, or line wires, coming from the power source. Typically, you’d connect the hot black wire from the power source to the traveler wire and the hot red wire from the power source to the first 3-way switch. For the second 3-way switch, you’d then connect the hot black traveler wire to the switch.

Provided you leave the switch in the off position, your broken bulb shouldn’t be drawing any power. However, there’s always the risk that the switch is turned on by accident, potentially causing electrical damage or even a fire. Plus, broken glass in the home is never ideal. For safety, it’s a good idea to remove broken bulbs as soon as possible. If you’re in doubt, a local lighting professional can help you remove the bulb safely and quickly.
